Plug Wires
I'm thinking, rather than go through this trouble, just replace the coils with ones that have automotive type plug-in wires.
This repair procedure to the OE coils sould be attemped only if there are none of the automotive types avaialble. My 2 cents.

I already bought some coils. The coils for an XJ550 have the same part number and color coding, we'll see how they work. I might just dig a little deeper on these coils and see if there's a way to re encase them with some type of epoxy and completely refurbish them since I already screwed this one up. Honestly, I think several factors have changed the game on this procedure.
One is the fact it is very difficult to find actual copper core wire. All the parts places now only carry the carbon fibre stuff. I found it very difficult to get those to work well with our coils and plug ends. This effects the cost of the repair as the 7MM copper core wire is about $30 shipped IIRC.
Another factor is that the Mikes XS coils, which for a long time have been the coils of choice by more than a few folks on the site. These coils were also less expensive than the Accell or Dyno coils. However, they are now proving to be very short lived.
So the cost factors are swinging both ways on the driver to complete this modification. And if your operating on a shoe string budget, well, sometimes time is much more available than funding. We make decisions based upon the funds available and the best info we have. For the budget minded, this modification could still be a viable option.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Now that you are playing well with others I can't help but help
Please note the information below is for a 78 XS1100E Standard. Others can chime in if any of the parts won't cross over to your bike.
I just completed a Dynatek DC-1 coil replacement with Accel Yellow 8mm copper core wires and NGK plug caps.
You can find the coils sold everywhere on the internet. My bike had the starter ballast so I had to remove it and by pass the ballast. Any one know if Doggs bike has a ballast
Plug wires were not as easy to find. I know you have MSD wires, but if you want the sassy looking yellow 8mm copper core wires ask for a set of Accel 4014. I had to special order mine from Autozone. Also, the 8mm wires are snug fitting, so get some dielectric silicone spray to lube them up. These wires fit a 70's model Chevy Luv truck and one set is really enough for two bikes. So you will have extra wire in case you mess up or want to do another project.
I got my NGK plugs at plugclub.net You need two LB05FP and two XB05FP caps. Both are 5K ohm resistor caps. The LB caps have a 90 degree bend and the XB have a long reach with 120 degree bend.
If you use the 5K ohm resistor caps you can use your BP6ES spark plugs.My heros have always been flat trackers.

FYI Masher, the 78-80 models had the 1.5 ohm coils from the factory. The TCI still runs on a 3 ohm system, so they added the BR to add another 1.5 ohm load.
The 81 models and the XJ came stock with 3 ohm coils. No BR needed.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Plug Wires
When you find the Dyna Coils of your choice on-line, they also offer a spark plug wire kit complete with terminals and boots. And yes, the wires are the non-suppressor, solid wire core type. I remember when you could buy this wire by the roll???

Solid Core Wire
You are right there. If you ask anyone at the (franchised) auto parts stores about non-suppressor/solid core plug wire, they think you are speaking in a foreign language. Most of them never heard of it, except for your locally owned mom and pop stores. I know that NAPA carries it in their Belden line, but it is not normally "on the shelf".
On a '79 Special, I took some 7mm solid core plug wires that I got along with the Dyna coils, wrapped them with some Moroso heat shielding, and added (Moroso) heat shrink where the wire/shield attaches to the NGK caps. So you end up with a well protected set of plug wires that I suspect you will never have to replace. I believe they are better protected than the OEM wires.
Will take some pictures if anyone is interested.

The best thing about this forum is that it rarely contains abuse, foul language or profanity. The default position of everyone on this site is that they want to help each other and this means that all advice, posts, tech tips and so on are made with the best possible intention. Members are patient, give up loads of time and effort to help people and spend hours writing tips etc. Nobody gets paid. It's done from a sense of community spirit, so your posts really are out of order. Yes, it's frustrating when things go wrong but you should learn from this... no more tantrums, insults and abuse. Otherwise you will find that people will simply not respond to your pleas for help and advice.
Since you've had a bad time with this problem and feel the tip is in some way inadequate, I really think you should write out a tip for the type of coil you have. It's your chance to give something back to everyone else and avoid someone making the same mistakes that you did.
I would hate to see this great site degenerate into some of the other sites out there which contain nothing but insults, aggression, crude comments and so on.
