  • Speedometer Cable

I finally got my bike back on the road, and the speedometer cable broke. I am trying to find a replacement locally as I want to ride

Can anyone tell me if this universal cable is the correct size for our bikes?

    Motion Pro Part# 01-0107
    50" length
    0.125" cable inner wire

The Motion Pro site just says it replaces most speedometer cable inner wire.

I found this one at Advance Auto that Tusler stated could be used on a MNS. The Dorman part # comes up as an ATP part, and it has a .130" inner wire. A very small difference, but still not the same. This one also comes with one tip, and the Motion Pro cable comes will 3 different tips. Will it work?

Make sure the clock isn't broken, or you'll just break another cable. Then, ride without it until you get a proper cable. You know how fast you're going.

      OEM cable

Motion Pro makes one, but good luck finding it and getting the right one.

Have you measured yours? They are all pretty much the same all across the board. You could probably even find a universal at an auto parts store. Maybe yank one from a junk yard off a car and cut it to length then square off the end. I'd be weary of heating it cause that spring steel tempers way to easy.

Been thirty plus yrs. but had the Venturer speedo cable break with less than 5K on the bike. Through work had access to new cable. Had a special mandril to square the ends which U hammered the topside of mandril. I seem to remember the standard squared up end fit the speedo fine but not quite down at the wheel. Wrapped a piece of brass shim stock around that cable end and re-hammered for it to fit. Also tinned the ends with solder using a torch, re-hammered both ends and that one is still in there today. Lubed that inner cable with Sioux air-gun grease and its still in there today. Never really figured out what hung up and wound up internal cable, although I suspect the brief issue was down at the wheel piece and re-lubricated that piece. That was 'old school' way of making up speedo cables,......and they lasted with never an issue later on as I had done many at work back then. The cheaper short-cut way of today with the crimped on end seems to work for most, but I still prefer the cable end squared and tinned with solder. Ironicly, still have many feet of the wrapped brass wire cable, but I'm sure shipping a chunck the correct length would cost more than just locally purchasing the length needed. Im sure the crimped on end could be filed down easily before installing on cable and the fit is close, just not quite there with out filing the four sides a bit.

Dave, a universal speedo repair kit from auto parts help section will work, I have done it. Just measure the correct length of the replacement to the broken core and crimp/stake the square tip on the end with the supplied tool. Grease it up good when installing.

Thanks guys! I ended up just ordering a new one from the local dealer. I am just going to take Marty's advice and assume that I am going the "right" speed until it arrives on Tuesday. Motoman, you lost me at brass shim stock. I don't even know what that is

Comes in sheets of different thicknesses and is normally used to shim clearances in certain applications. In this scenario, I used a small piece in the formed mandril that squares the speedo cable end by smacking the top piece with a hammer. The shim stock allowed the squared end to be compressed a bit more resulting with the cable to fit in that lower housing, and of course tinned the square end with solder and torch, smoothed up the four sides a bit with file and installed.
