  • Brake caliper seals.

I have run into a little snag. I've been going through the brake calipers on my XJ11. I need to replace the dust seals. The trouble is, these dust seals are not the typical boot style, they are a smaller square rubber ring inside the caliper similar to the fluid seal. I have a parts bike with good fluid seals so those are covered, but the only rebuild kits I can find are an entire piston assembly kit for around $60. If anyone can locate these please chime in. I've tried O-rings from Ace, but none of them have the right diameter or thickness. I can't use the calipers from my parts bike cause they bolt to the forks differently. I can't use the forks cause the wheel bolts differently, and the rotor is a smaller size because the bike is a 78' XS750 standard. Subtle differences are annoying me. Maybe they are interchangeable with a virago? Looking for an alternative.

This is crap. I have found the caliper seal set, but there's no way I'm paying $30 for each caliper just for a few rubber rings. I just want to buy 2 dust seals. I can't find any parts dealer with the exploded view who will sell me the dust seals alone.

I was considering using the pistons with the boot style seals from the other calipers and then attaching them to the caliper with glue instead of the metal snap ring but I don't think it will last long. If someone would buy my E-bay parts then I would have no problem forking out the money for the caliper seals. Hint hint. Who needs parts for a 78' XS750 standard?

My neighbor says he may have an XJ1100, I'll see what he's got on it. Most of these sites want to sell the whole piston assembly for $60. I wish I had an XS11 Special sitting here to change the forks and calipers over.

If you really want to change forks use the triple tree, forks and all from a XS11 standard. Brakes are way better and are more adaptable for modifications.

I have a 78' XS750 standard here, but the rotors are smaller so the caliper mounting is different. And they're not slotted. I know, I'm picky. I could run em temporary but the forks are leaking every where and I don't want to mess with it. I ordered new pads today plus a bunch of other stuff. I should hear this beast run in a week or two. I can use the calipers without the dust seals for a short time if need be just to piddle around on. In the meantime I will be looking for a backyard fix. It will come to me eventually.

Thank you for that! Those will work just fine. Whats weird is my midnight had a different style caliper, but I can't remember which dust seals were used. Maybe it did have the double seals inside.

The '80 MNS had the same calipers as the other specials. Only the '81 MNS and the xj11 had the same calipers as yours.
