  • Is this drive train play normal?

Some background: I did the 2nd gear fix on my XJ a while back but it dawned on me that I didn't use locktite when I torqued the counter shaft bolt back down to 51 ft lbs. So today I pulled the clutch basket off, and with the bike on the center stand, shoved a broom handle through the back wheel, put the tranny in first gear and re-torqued the bolt. Then I put the clutch basket back on and proceeded to torque the nut down to 51 ft lbs as well, using first gear and the same broom stick. Just as the wrench was clicking at 51 lbs, the broom stick cracked. I put something stouter (monster screw driver) back in the rear wheel to verify the correct torque, but when I turned the rear wheel backwards a little to remove the screw driver I noticed that the tire would spin for approximately 1-1.5 inches before the clutch basket would turn. And when I put the 27mm socket back on the clutch basket, I could rotate it back and forth quite a ways before the rear tire would turn one way or the other.

So my question basically is how normal is this? It seemed like a lot of play in the drive train. I know there is some play because after fixing 2nd gear, I was turning the middle drive to U-joint coupler by hand while shifting the transmission through the gears just to watch what goes on in there and there certainly was play at the coupler. Maybe this is normal but never noticed since we don't spend any time in reverse? Your thoughts?

    The play is perfectly normal.

Yep, the slop you feel is the dogs of the tranny gears moving back and forth in their mating gear slots. You should notice that if you are in 5th gear, there won't be nearly as much play. It is normal to have that play, of course, there are other places that can develop some play, such as the middle drive, u-joint, drive shaft, final drive, but these should be minimal. Add up all of this slop and you have a normal XS11 drivetrain.

I driven a Russian tractor, it shifts much smoother.

Just the question I was going to ask...

Glad I saw this post, just got my 79 F on the road yesterday for the 1st time since I bought it. I was surprised at how much "clunk" I felt when applying toque during shifting, especially from 1st to third. It didn't feel like a problem, bike goes up and down very smoothly, but just a little disconcerting. Forgot how much power these bikes have, especially after my T120 and Harley riding. Glad to have it, already getting some good natured crap from my Harley Bros', but most seem to get it, the bike has a place in 2 wheel history, and I am feeling good about the purchase. Ride safe, Jon
