He guys i drained the oil and replaced the filter with a filter i found at a dealership here in gallup. I added a 46 oz of oil. Did i add to much cuz oil is everywhere on the ground???

Did you look at the service manual to see how to check your oil level? There is a window in the side of the clutch pan, the bike must be on the centerstand or level to check it.
If oil is on the ground, chances are you did not put the drain bolt back in or you have the filter cup installed incorrectly.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The o ring should be replaced too. If there was any gas in the old oil it expands too big to seal properly.

The oil filter usually comes with a new filter cup oring in the box and crush washer for drain bolt.

As John said, there are two o-rings in the filter bowl assembly. One is on the base of the bolt that holds on the filter bowl and the other one on the rim of the bowl. Some times the one on the bowl wont relax and comes out of the grove (especially if you you a new one) causing an oil leak. Another tip, use the proper torque when tightening down the bowl and drain bolt, you dont want to have to deal with a stripped bolt. Also the crush washer on the drain bolts may need replacing. Just go to your local auto store and get the big 19 mm aluminum crush washers.
If you decide to change the middle and final drive oils make sure you take the fill bolt out before you drain them.'79 XS11 F

Where are you putting the oil? If you are actually putting the oil in the crankcase then you have a problem. Should be a little over 100 ounces going in. Is the oil coming out the top or the bottom? Did you accidents drain the middle drive instead of the crankcase?Nathan

how much oil came out when you changed the filter?
Shoulda been ~3 quarts if the engine was full.
Or didja just take off the filter bowl and not the actual drain plug that faces forward behind it?
That'd drain out just about a cupful, leaving the rest still in the crankcase.

I removed the drained plug and bowls. Only 1 or 2 quarts came out. I pulled the side covering where you pour the oil down and got in there and scrubbed to remove and gunk and stains. I wonder if i damaged a gasket or something. All i did was pullled the side covering off and cleaned. The mufflers are leaking oil or somea type ofi fluide and smoking alot so im guesing some of the cylinder are leaking oil.81 LH

OK, so you pulled the clutch side cover off, did you clean the surfaces really good and use a new gasket or RTV type gasket maker? If the existign gasket came off clean, I have reused them, but you do need to clean the mating surface well.
As to what is coming out of your exhaust, is it black looking, does it smell at all? It is not uncommon for you to have fuel getting through to the exhaust if your floats are leaking or your just running THAT rich. It can disolve soem of the carbon in the pipes and come out looking black.
If you actually have oil coming out your exhaust, that would mean either you REALLY over filled the crankcase, or you have something REALLY serious wrong in a cylinder, like a hole in a piston. With the miles on that bike, I seriously doubt you have a holed piston.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
