Yes sir, todays the day for the maiden voyage. The bike is ready. I set the float level higher and it cranked right up just the way it should. Wiring is done, the tach doesn't work at all now, and I need an electronic flasher. The tank is primed and will look half way natural to the untrained eye. I was welding and grinding until 7:30 last night. I'll get some pics up, it looks.... unique. I just have to put on my petcocks and mount the tank.

Went on my first ride today to state patrol. Right away I learned that I have the 2nd and 5th gear problem. Other than that the bike ran out strong. It rode perfect and the pipes sound perfectly loud enough. The Standard tank looks goofy on it cause I had to pick the back of it up about an inch for the fuel lines to clear the air box, but it's sort of growing on me. Oh well, I ordered my XJ tank today so that will be here in a week or so. My blinkers will light up solid but won't blink. You can see my rear fender and trailer light, looks nostalgic I think. It was fun rockin it down the highway with no license plate. I passed 4 cops today and none of them even noticed, funny. At least I know it rides and I'll have it registered now, but I'm hanging it up for the year cause it's cold, and I don't want to hurt the tranny anymore than it is. Next year....

I realize this post has been dead for a while but I have some updates. I've been busy this winter, sort of. I pulled the engine totally apart, honed the cylinders, replaced all the gaskets and valve seals, replaced the mains, did the 2nd and 5th gear fix, polished most of the covers, and painted the engine black. Right now I'm working on painting the frame. I painted it with a bright silver metallic base coat, then a cobalt candy blue top coat. I had a hard time cause the lighting I was working in. This is the first time I've ever worked with candy and it turned out like cap. I got quite a few runs, missed some areas, and some areas were covered too much. So I will have to sand to get it all even then touch it up and clear it. Maybe next week I'll have some pics of the bike back on it's wheels with the motor in. I'm getting closer and am motivated cause I want to ride soon.

I've been told by several pro painters that the main trick with candy is to increase your spray distance by about 50%....Last edited by crazy steve; 02-26-2013, 12:58 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Yeah I did quite a few things wrong. First was my lighting. I should have set the frame up to where I could flip it over to see the top and bottom. Cause the light effects the color so much. I should have take more time and sprayed thinner coats, and possibly added reducer for thinner layers. No doubt, candy is a pain. I'm just waiting for it to cure so I can try to fix it. The tanks and fenders will be easy enough though."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

I can't wait to get some pics of it in the sun, and under a blue neon light. I'm stripping the paint off the frame and trying again. The runs in the candy are too bad to fix properly. Not to mention I hate how dark it is in some areas. I already added some pearl metallic, and some clear to the candy to lighten it up and make it pop more the next time around. This time I will get it right."The Hooligan" XJ1100, Virago Gauge Pods, Screaming Eagle Mufflers, K&N Filter, hand made rear fender, side covers, and solo seat, round bar conversion, small headlight, tail light, and cat eye turn signals, chip fuses, rewired the right way.

Yeah, you can't 'fix' candy. Once it's screwed up, about all you can do is start over....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I's alright, the weather s supposed to be warm by Friday, this dogg will have his day, before the end of the week. Okay, I stripped the frame and repainted. It's as good as I want to get it. This time around I didn't get one single run or sag in the paint, and the shade looks nice and even all around. The pearl white and extra clear in the candy helped to brighten it up. Here's pics at the end of yesterday. I admit that I'm cutting a few corners as far as cosmetics. I haven't painted my secondary drive or my swing arm. I won't paint the wheels until I wear out the tires. I will do that stuff some other time as weekend projects. These pics really don't do this paint job any justice. You have to see it in the sun with your own 2 eyes to appreciate the color.

This pic was taken at dusk with the flash on my camera. It shows the glow of the candy a little better. Not sure if I like the blue frame, but I didn't want to buy an extra quart of black paint, so....
