No kidding! Be VERY careful with that beast! I don't know how big of a kid you are, but these things are heavy, even for a bigger guy. Take it slow, and use every possible caution you can. Be sure to take the MSF course before you try to take it out on the road. Get the proper gear and remember ATGATT - all the gear, all the time.

Well its true. I see most kids into gangs, to much video games, tv, so on. And yes my mom does know about the bike. And i fixed up that old jeep. Replaced the transmission and did other work it needed. But thats not what im here for. Im here to fix up my first motorcycle. And its been stored inside a garage.

Good to see a young man working at things like this instead of his first round of carpel tunnel of the thumbs. You should be proud of what you accomplished on the Jeep and what your taking on with the bike.

Yep, you found the big dog of the time as your first scoot. It is big, heavy and when properly setup will go in a straight line like a complete bat-out-of-he!!.

So by all means, keep in mind you need to respect the amount of power this bike produces. It does NOT corner nearly as well as it accelerates, and the brakes are not up to todays performance, so it slows itself better by downshifting really. Point being, it has the power to get you going way to fast for the upcoming curve and not the ability to take that curve at speed, the agility to let you brake in the curve easily, or the brakes to get you slowed down in time. Also, this is a street bike, it does not play well in the dirt. Not saying you can't ride it in the dirt, just that it will feel like your walking on ice with gym shoes, instead of running a baseball diamond with cleats on. Hint number one, when riding on gravel or dirt, rely heavily on your rear brakes. locking up the rear tire is much less hazardous to your health than locking up the front tire.

You also have the one year and model of XS that has the crazy linked brake system. So the components are a little different than any other XS, however, they are exactly the same as the XJ IIRC.

Since this is your very first ever motorcycle, Definitely take the MSF basic rider course, please. Not sure about where you live, but here in Ohio, you have to have it to get your endorsement if your under 18.
