  • Relay help.

I have 2 relays here from the wiring harness on my XJ and need to decide which one to use for a headlight relay.

    1st relay says: 4h7-? Omron 09y1d9 Second relay says: 4u8-00 Omron 28y1d9

Which one should I use? I also can't remember how to replace a diode. I know I can get them at radio shack, but I'm not sure which one it is, and which direction it needs to be. I can see where in the wiring harness it should go, but maybe you should tell me just to be sure.

You don't need a relay; the headlight power is ran through the start button and disconnected when the button is pressed...

Isn't that what the relay does? I see where the R/Y wire leaves the fuse and passes through the starter switch, then comes out into L/B. After that it runs into the reserve lighting unit. The reserve lighting unit must be the function for the headlight relay also then huh? I removed the reserve lighting unit, so if I want this function back I will have to add a relay right?

Right now, I've run my R/Y wire from the fuse to the beam selector switch from there it goes to high or low. So the headlight is wired directly to the ignition switch.

The XJ doesn't have a headlight relay; the RLU is for switching from high beam to low (or vice-versa) if one burns out.

Whether or not one of the starting circuit relays would work as a headlight relay (connected like a '80-81 relay) is hard to say as the coil voltage may not be right.

One relay was for the kickstand, the other I can't remember. The starter relay is the round solenoid right? Those are the only 2 relays I see in the diagram, yet I seem to have 2 here. I only have 1 pigtail that would match a relay in the wire pile. I may have had an extra solenoid that came with the bike though, so don't worry. All Is still right so far

You know what? I think one of them may be the starting circuit cutoff. What do you think?

Yes, one is the cutoff relay; the other one is the sidestand relay. These are interlocked so you can't start the motor unless the bike is in neutral or the clutch is pulled and/or if the sidestand is up.

I wouldn't try using either of these for a headlight relay as it's unlikely that they're rated for continuous duty or the amps needed. If you really want to add a headlight relay, get one off a '80-81 XS or a generic Bosch headlight relay and use one of those. If you leave the headlight power connected through the start switch, you don't need a relay; the headlight will go off when starting the motor.

I'll just add a handlebar switch so I can turn off the headlight when I'm wrenching on things. More reliable that way, kind of what I'm after anyway. Thanks for your help
