      8mm x 1.25. It's a common size.

          Hi Barrett and welcome,
          The bolt is an M8 x 1.25 pitch x 25mm long.
A longer bolt will work if it's all you can find.
It also needs a large diameter flat washer to squidge the rubber thing down properly.
And yes, you do need it. The tale of a rider crashing and the unbolted tank lifting and then falling to crush the rider's nuts may not be just an urban legend.

It's referred to as 'metric fine thread' BTW

Of course the tank needs it on... that's why it's there. A minor spill could have the tank off and petrol everywhere including the rider or other people.

Yes, I would get a replacement and install it. No I would not let it stop me from riding it though. If the seat is properly installed, it does keep the tank from rising up, so it would be safe. Now, if you have an incident, and for some reason the seat is jarred loose, now the tank might come up. But reality is if the seat is off, so are you, and therefore the bike is not upright anymore and the tank bottom coming off the frame is the least of your worries IMHO.
