  • random headlight fuse

The headlight fuse now goes at random. Seems to love to wait until nightime so I can't get home without changing it but it's random. I have a new regulator installed and an extra Reserve Lighting Unit but I've tried both of them. I'll swap them again just to make sure. Any similar experiences would be of interest. Otherwise everything is in order, runs
    like the wind...... Thanx

You have a intermittent short somewhere. The first place to look would be the handlebar switch.

Do you have a fairing on it?

We can help you better if you fill out your info at the bottom as to your bike, accessories, and any mods.

+1 on what Greg said. You have an intermittent short somewhere and you are going to have to go hunting to find it.

        handlebars looked good

Thank you BA80 yesterday I took the handle bar switches apart and everything looked fine but haven't rode again to test. Have been all over that bike this summer. It has had the headlight problem for quite some time. I had a problem with the main fuse holder for awhile but fixed that. hmm ..... have a feeling this one will take awhile....will post occasional updates

        fusebox replaced with
        4 single fuse holders

        starter button ala Radioshak

        new regulator

        Red 1978 standard

        Moto Guzzi handlebars

        no fairings or windshield

        Jardine 4 to 1

        drilled airbox

          not so random

Turns out the blown fuse isn't really random.
It happens during a restart, like for example when doing a u-turn
or slow movement and you stall the engine. Then on restart the
fuse blows. Went through three of them the other day and they all happened that way.

            Hey Red,

You just stumbled on the next area to look, the headlight bucket and the holes where the wires run thru to the harness and frame around the neck.

Turning the bars is moving wires around, and one has rubbed bare somewhere and is touching the bucket or frame and shorting to ground, blowing fuse.

Then only other 2 things in the headight circuit I can see causing a problem are the RLU and the diode in the wiring harness.

              I suspect the diode.

I think that was it and I found it.......I think....thanks to all.
Some old wire was sticking out. Looks like it was the turning after all.
