  • in the rain

Hi guys I have been pretty much been riding my bike every day everyware, the last few months when I get stuck riding in the rain, or it gets rained on, it runs like crap for awile. It really has to dry out before it goes back to running normal, any idea why?

Most likely culprit is the coils or wires. On mine, it ran fine in the rain actually, but if I washed it at a car wash it would not start for 10-15 minutes. I wanted a little better coil anyway, so I swapped out to the VF1000 coils, which also let me put on new wires.

Try this, get your bike warmed up good, set it on the centerstand in your dark garage with a fan blowing across the engine. Now use a water bottle to spray water into the area of the spark plug wires and coils from the front and see if you can see spark jumping from the wires or coils to ground.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I had the same problem a while back, and it turned out to be a crack in one of the coils. I sealed it up with JB Weld, and that fixed it until I swapped them out for the Accel coils.

Yes, it shorts to the pickup coil wires.

How did I miss this fix?! This seems to be better to retain function of the neutral indicator (and keep it runnin in the rain). At the time of trouble, I could never figure out why it would run in neutral but would sputter while in gear.

I just had an issue with my neutral wire when wet. I replaced the whole neutral wire from the case connection all the way to the plug behind the fusebox.

I just crimped the new wire to the end and pulled it through the look with the old wire.
