What direction does the round springs face when hanging the float needle? Does it face in toward the float bowl or out. Or does it matter.

Believe it or not, which style carb you have changes the answer. If you have the later model carbs, the spring is the last piece in before the cover goes on, cover meaning the little plate in the center of the slide held in with two small screws. So the spring is pushing the needle down into the emulsion tube.
on the older style carbs, the spring goes in first. So the spring is pulling the needle up out of the tube.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Sorry i was talking about the float bowl needle and seat. Not sure what its called. The spring hangd from the flost and it had two loops on it. Does the loops face in towrd the bowl or out. Or does it matter? Sorry forthe misunderstandingBrian

Oops, forgot to answer the question, I believe you install it so it goes on the float tang the furthest. Don't forget to adjust the drop tangs so the floats don't drop down too low and cause that little clip to jam up the needle.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Oops...sorry for my confusion on that one, you said float bowl, and float valve.
I never really paid any attention to that to be honest. Has not burned me yet anyway.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

Brian,
Install it with the offset closest to the back of the float tang, closest to the pin.
Also, Phil made a very important point regarding adjusting the 'drop' tang. Until I adjusted mine I thought my G hated the sidestand for overnight stays.
What happened was that when the float dropped in the bowl of the #4 carb, the float valve needle would rotate and the lttle clip/wire would hang up on the tang. The result was an inoprable float valve and cylinder flooding.
