  • Leak Fixed, Rev Return Fixed, Now idle is unpredictable

Hello again. I appreciate everyones avdice and wanted to let you know that my carb fuel leak is fixed and my rev now returns to normal. I think I just needed to take it out for a ride to loosen everything back up.

Now I have three more minor problems.

#1 When the bike is idling it runs a little above 1K RPM's then randomly will increase the idle to about 3K RPM's and hold for a minute or so then return to 1K RPM's all without me toching the bike. Any ideas?

#2 I have a 4into1 kerker exhaust on the bike and the baffles were removed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can quiet the bike a little or where I can find used baffles for a reasonable price?

#3 My turn signals turn on but do not flash. Occationally, the left signals will flash normally but never the right. I think it may be the Flasher Canceling Unit or possibly the Flasher Relay. Any ideas on this one?

I really appreciate all of your help!!!

#3. I am running extra lights and a radio on my 11fs. At idle, the signals got real slow. When the battery is low, same thing at all speeds. Last year they stopped flashing, then the bike was hard to start, so I replaced the bettery. Then everything worked fine. A friend told me to get rid of the self-cancelling flasher and put in a heavy duty automobile two prong. At first I had the wrong terminals plugged in, then rotated and the signals now flash at the same speed idling or revved. Even flash the trailer signals. Hope this helps, Rover

      Hey there Jason,

#2, check with Dennis Kirk, or JCW, I've seen baffles in their catalogs for a few bucks!!

#3 Check the grounding straps on your turn signals. The signals use a large O-ring type washer that the ground is attached to for grounding to the frame, they can get corroded or rusty, especially under the rear fender area. Also, check your fuses. Like Rover said, these bikes generate very little power at idle, and the turn signals draw a surprising amount, 27Watts X2 / 12v = 4.5 amps per side, and with the head light and rear tail light already on, there isn't much left. The turn signal flasher is a thermal design, and has to have enough current drawn thru it to make it cycle.

After cleaning the connectors/grounds/ and even check the bulb sockets for corrosion, then revving the engine up to 3-4k should generate enough power to properly run the signals. Aside from the standard thermal auto replacement, they also make an electronic one, a bit more pricey at about $8-9 bucks each, but will work well with low current levels. I had to put them on mine after installing LED's in my turn signals...not enough current load to activate the thermal signals. YOU WILL LOOSE your self cancelling feature, but vs. spending $80+ for a Yamaha replacement, most folks prefer to remember to turn them off manually!!! HTH.

on # 1 . . . have you synced the carbs? Hunting idle can be a sign of a vacuum leak in the mainfolds or carbs badly out of sync (among other thing).

        Good luck!

my xs11's throttle had a mind of its own just like yours. I was reading the forum and most guys say that the carbs needed to be syncronized. I used somone elses suggestion and used a small wire from a twist tie to try to get the openings in the carbs even. it wastnt totally finished. the revs would still wander around a bit. I looked it all over and it turns out the the cam cover gasket was garbage, i was losing vacum. i replaced it, now the bike runs much better. All be it louder than hell with no exhaust on it.
