  • Question for those using an oil cooler.

How much 'extra' oil, if any, do you have to put in the bike as a result of having the additional plumbing for the oil cooler ?
Is there a 'recommended' ammount ?
    1980G Standard, Restored
    Kerker 4 - 1
    850 Rear End Mod
2-21 Flashing LED Arrays on either side of license plate for Brake Light Assist, 1100 Lumen Cree Aux Lights,
    Progressive springs, Showa rear shocks
    Automatic CCT
    1980GH Special, Restored
Stock Exhaust, New Handlebars, 1" Spacer in Fork Springs, Automatic CCT, Showa Rear Shocks
    '82 XJ1100 (Sold)
Automatic CCT, RC Engineering 4 X 1 Exhaust, K&N Pods, #50 Pilot Jets, YICS Eliminator. Sorely missed.

      Hi Cobia,
First time it will take 1/2 a liter or so after that it's just a normal oil change. Fill to the top of the glass and run for a few minutes then top up.

Right out of the original yellow owners manual, 81H(yours will be the same with cooler)4.4US quarts...........81SH, 4.2US quarts. Those capacities are with filter change. For others in question or dispute.......it don't get much simpler than that. That extra for the Standard just covers the sight glass.

I wonder what the extra .2 quarts for the standard is from since the motors below the cylinders where the oil goes are all the same?

The 81H had a standard oil cooler.

trbig, I would imagine in order to have a 'running' level in the pan that was considered enough to keep pick-up tube/screen safely submerged, the bit of extra oil would compensate for the small capacity of the oil cooler and additional hoses.

JAT but maybe the extra oil has to do with the slightly different stance of a standard vs a special. Dunno myself but I always start and run it then check the sight glass so I am not sure how much I put in it.
