  • No air filter

So I pulled the airbox off of my 80 G that I bought a few days ago to check out the air filter (should have done this when I first got the bike) and you know what I found in the airbox? Nothing, the PO had apparently decided that air filters were stupid. So this bike has been running without an airfilter for who knows how long.

My question is what kind of damages do I need to start looking for. I am planning on pulling the carbs for a good cleaning, and the inside of the air box is all kinds of greasy. What else should I look for or do to negate the unfiltered air my bike has been getting?

I dont think there is much to do, but put a filter in it.

You might think about running a couple ounces of Seafoam in crankcase at idle for ten minutes before changing oil and filter to clean out extra crud.

Only thing it might do is let the motor ingest a bit harsher gritty substances, but nothing should have gotten into the bottom end any worse. These harsher things will wear the rings/cylinder faster, but if the bike still has good compression, throw a filter in there and don't worry about it.

Good to know. Thanks for the replies, already have a K&N filter ordered and a bottle of seafoam sitting on my shelf ready to use when the filter gets here.

Pull the plugs, look into the cylinders with a flashlight, run some Sea Foam, run a compression test, rebuild the carbs, pull the valve cover, check the shims, sync, colortune, and enjoy. That is good advice for any new bike owner. If the PO was that screwy, there is a lot of other neglect waiting to be found. It's a long process, but a damn enjoyable one.
