  • adventures in putting on an acct

So frankenbike strikes again. Took the plugs out, took the old cct out, took the cover off the timing, moved the c to the pointer.(XJtiming, has two pointers, was only able to move the engine to the one on the right, according to the xj manual, it was the correct one)

Filed the upper screw hole a bit on the acct, from a 04 raptor 660, just enough so tightening it down was easy by hand. took off the bolt off of the top of the acct, pushed ratcheting part in(using the relase on the side). followed instructions putting everything back on. Then I put new spark plugs in after adjusting the gap to between .0028 and .0032. Turned on the gas, pulled out the choke and it tries to turn over....but does not catch.

So, someone please help me from this Operator Error

That gap is way too small, should be .028"-.032"

Now Phil you know what he really meant he just put an extra .0 in.

pbaker27 what do you mean does not catch? The starter motor spins but engine doesn't? or the starter begins to spin but stops? Or the engine turns over and does not start? I only have one concern about the way you did it in that you took out the CCT before you turned the engine to the "C" mark. Really you should have turned to the mark before you took the old unit out.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

        Yes meant .028 to .032.

Unfortunately I new nothing about cam chain tensioners and my buddy who has been working on bikes apparently doesn't know as much as he thinks. The original one was leaking, he took it off, we went to a junkyard, got a different one, put it on without adjusting anything and engine ran fine. fixed some other issues, rode it around the block no issue, brought it back an it leaked like mad. took it off and the gasket was roached so just left it off. Ordered a new gasket which I just got today along with the acct from ebay. moved c to the pointer and you know the rest.

Engine is turning over, but will not start.

If you rotated the engine any at all with the tensioner out, there is a risk of jumping the cam chain. If it was me, I would take the valve cover off and check the timing marks on the camshafts. Could it be something as simple as you guys getting the plug wires mixed up?

yah, it was allll me with the plugs, and the wires on each side, one wire is not long enough for the outside plug, so don't think it was wrong wires on wrong plugs. Apparently I need supervision when working on motorcycles

Since 1 and 4 are on one coil and 2 and 3 on the other, if you follow the plug wires back and they match that, you should be ok. Depending how your wires were cut, the 2 wire will reach to 1 and same on 3 and 4.

The wires are labeled with number I just discovered.
