  • Carb Float Conundrum

So I just finished my semi-annual carb rebuilding on my 79 SF and set the float height to exactly 26mm....from the surface of the gasket (not the gasket surface on the body of the carb). I know, I know, but I was about through a case of beer at that point and my manual has so much grease on it that I can barely read that section anyway. Gurus: Is it really worth tearing them off to fix this? Will the extra 1mm of compressed gasket height be that catastrophic? Chime in, please.

    Heights

I check my heights manually and individually for each carb on my SF. I still have brass floats. My bowls didn't come down to the right level until I was at 26.4mm on two of them. The others are at 25.9mm. Your probably fine, ride like you stole it and see what happens. If the plugs look lean then you'll know for sure.

Well I think the gasket is thicker than 1mm, so I think you will find you are going to be too lean across the board. Won't hurt to ride it and see how she performs, just keep an eye on the plugs.

+1 on what Nate said. Every bike and bank-o-carbs is different. The 1mm or so on the lean side might be just fine for your bike in your gorgraphical area. Give it a try first.

That may be a concern. I have a properly drilled airbox and green Dyna Coils in it, though I did raise the needle jet by 1 notch.

I would say leave the needle in the stock position.

Alright, I pulled the plugs after 40 miles and found them to be running lean so I pulled the carbs and am resetting everything (and not drinking this time). It's a lot less enjoyable but far easier. Btw, this was the first time I dumped all the components in an ultrasonic. Amazing results. Just as added info, I am a hotrod guy and approach the bike as such. It often works (like mirror polishing the cam area for faster oil return) and sometimes doesn't (like trying this instance, for example). I will let you all know once I colortune and resync it at various rpms.
