  • New bike New question

Alright guy s I ve been hounding everyone for help with my 81 midnight and am gonna order and change the coils and hopefully that does. So while I m awaiting coils I ll start my new or new to me bike I bought a 1983 Yamaha xj 1100 chopped into a bobber, I like it drove it for 3 hrs nice ride went smooth and picked it up cheap woo hook. So with a new bike and me being a rookie to anything other then riding bikes I have two new questions to start first is I am trying to find as much info and specs on the bike I as I can but when I google the xj 1100 I have found articles saying 82 was the last year, the information I have givin on the bike are of the ownership. So is this still possibly an 83? Second is I don't like the display, speedometer and tac can these easily be changed to the round style like my 81.
    Thanks as always

If you need a manual for the XJ, you can download one from the link in my signature. As for the year, they were only available in the US in '82, but they continued through '84 (IIRC) in Canada, so your '83 is quite probable.

Easily be removed? Absolutely not! All the lights and sensors run through that thing so it would take a good bit of rewiring to remove that display.

The speedo on the xs and XJ are an oddball 2.93 to 1 ratio that is very rare in aftermarket speedos.

The tach is electronic and runs off a leg of the generator, also unusual. Again.it is possible to make one run of the spark plug wires but would take a bit of work.

If u get a speedo/tach from a different xs/xj 1100 it will work, but to use aftermarket anything it'll take some surgery. And you may lose function of your idiot light features...

Just go without gauges. Who needs them.

Drive as fast as you need to, if you go too fast a policeman will tell you.

You could just mount a GPS instead for speed and direction info.
