  • temperature gauge on ebay

I just notice a temperature gauge on ebay. I am pretty sure it wont be very accurate but it could give me an idea on how hot i am running. I am considering buying the item. Any one else like this temperature gauge?

Its almost impossible to find a temperature gauge that doubles as a fill plug because out clutch is in the way... That might be short enough not to hit the clutch but isnt going to give you a good indication of temperature, just a round-about's idea...

I wouldnt be surprised to find out the oil temperature is in between 120-140 which on that gauge is red haha...

I wish i would've checked the difference between the XS650 & XS11's Dipstick while I still had the 650. There is a guy in Austin that makes them, but for the XS650.

I wonder what the point of an oil gauge is? Ok, it may show the oil temperature accurately (or possibly not, depending on the gauge and position) but, other than that, what good are they? You think it's reading hot, so then what? Stop the bike? Maybe fit an oil cooler if there isn't one on already? Does anyone have an 'official' oil temperature figure? I've never seen one....

                Hey Richard,

There isn't a difference because the XS11 does NOT use or have a dipstick on the oil filler cap. IT has the sight glass window instead! Not sure IF the temp probe/dip stick would hit moving parts inside the XS11 crank case??

So... JC, that gauge's sensor probe would not stick out/down far enough to actually reach the oil in the crank, so doubt if it would provide an accurate reading anyways! It might "FIT" The filler hole, but that's about it!

I think the oil would get slung up on it TC... it wouldnt always be in good contact, intermittent at best, maybe not at all at low rpm. A good operating temperature for oil is about 180F...

I've been running an automotive style gauge on my bike for a little while now. I've only done limited riding since its fitment but here's some preliminary figures for anyone interested.

Note, all these figures are just a rough guide as the gauge is only a cheapie, and haven't measured it against a benchmark tester (just yet) but it gives me some idea on what's happening between my knees.

                    1/ Ambient temp - 55 degrees - steady riding at 60mph - 158 degree oil temp

2/ Ambient temp - 55 degrees - steady riding at 60mph - 170 degree oil temp with oil cooler covered in.

                    3/ Ambient temp - 55 degrees - having a bit of a play - 198 degree oil temp

Can't wait till summer to test it out for comparison's sake.

                        Hi Errol
For measuring temperature in this way there is two sides to a system, the probe and the gauge, you only mention the gauge (sorry I get "error" when trying to read your mod in your link)

With the oil filler cap temp gauge its the probe thats in question, though a decent gauge to tell us what the probe is reading is equally as important.

I once topped up my oil whilst travelling with an oil burning XS11 motor, forgot to refit the filler cap and set off, within half a mile I'd dumped half the engine oil all over my leg and the back end of the bike making rear tyre grip interesting to say the least. My point is that within a mile of riding all the engine oil will have hit the filler cap, or a temp gauge filler cap if fitted.

So these type temperature gauges should be pretty good

I just did that this weekend! The oil gets slung off the clutch basket. It comes out as little splatter drops.

Speaking of, I need to get all that oil cleaned off....

Hahaha not just me thats daft then

They are little splatter drops, LOTS of them, and you'll get what I'm talking about, the amount of oil hitting a filler cap temp gauge will be LOTS!! so that type of gauge should be pretty good.
