I checked the pick-up coil gap(s) and there wasn't any? Both coils were all but touching the reluctor. Could not get even a .005" feeler guage in there. Don't have a clue how they got that way.
I adjusted both to .026" and retweaked the carb sync. Also rechecked the timing and advance - all good. It is running a lot better. Test drive showed much improvement. I believe it is running like it is supposed to now. I would not have guessed that not enough gap would affect the running, but it certainly changed things. Time to try it out in the NC mountains at the rally next month.
