  • 79 & 80 XS1100 Interchangeable?

    I've got a '79 XS1100.
Looking to buy a "80 XS1100 for parts.
The '79 was running good some years ago when I decided to paint it and add hard satle bags, trunk and fairing. Also replace the gas tank that had rust in it but never had any problem from it.
Once I stated to put it back together I found it would no longer run. It will crank but Spits and sputters. I think its the carbs or electronic.
I have bought a set of carbs off Ebay but they didn't help. But who knows if they where good carbs?
The '80 has new tires and battery (which I could use). It will run. but the guy says it sounds like it has a bent valve or two.
I want to take parts off it one at a time till I find the problem.
Might want to latter repair the '80. Since it don't sound like it needs much.
Would be paying around $600 for it.
Will the parts interchange so I could chase down the problem on the '79?

Well, sounds like you need to clean the carbs on your '79 for sure!

Some parts are interchangeable and some are not, and some are with a little moding. What is it you want to swap?

      '79 '80 interchangeable

I've tried cleaning the carbs and putting kits in them with no luck. My brother who has a Motor Cross track has also tried. He's no mechanic, but works on smaller bikes all the time.
I'm thinking maybe it could be the CID box or something.
      I'm at a lost.
The '80 seems like a good deal. I've been thinking of putting my bike in the shop. Most likely the shop bill would be over $600.
Thought this would be worth a try.

Well, I would bet you that the other bike will need its carbs cleaned just like yours.

First, read through this on cleaning the carbs:

Did the jets in the carb kits you put in match IDENTICALLY? Often the kits don't have the right style jets in them.

That would be hard to say. It has been a while since I had fooled with it.
          I got discussed with it.
If I remember right the original carbs had bad diaphragms. So I got some carbs off Ebay and it worked OK till I painted it.
But I don't think the two sets were a exact match.
Is $600 to much or about the right price for one of these bikes in its condition?
Its also missing the left side cover.
From what I've seen, these bikes are not in great demand.
They don't tend to bring a high price.
I bought mine about 13 years ago for $1000. And it run good thru two sets of rear tires.
But it looks like there or plenty of part for them on Ebay.
          That's a good thing.

There are plenty of people in your area that have experience repairing these bikes.

Look HERE for someone near you and see if they can/will help.

mikubuilder, I take it you think that is to much. How much would you say its worth. The guy was asking $800 for it. I sent him an email that I might consider $600. Didn't really think he would reply. A few days latter he did. Plan to go look at it Friday.
How about anyone else. How much to offer.
One thing I like about these bikes is there are a lots of parts out there.
But that also means it would be hard to part one out.
I would like to maybe get them both running.

For a non runner with major engine issues (bent calves would be considered major) I wouldn't pay more than $400 if it was in decent cosmetic shape with a title. $200-250 bad shape with title or good shape without title.

                        Battery, I don't care.

Tires, well you never have said if you have a special or a standard or what the other bike is. They do have a different size rear tire, although they can be interchange. Maybe worth a small bit more but not full price of the tires, maybe $50 if they truly are new with nubs but if the nubs are gone he could be full of it. Also, when were they new? Could be 10 year old "new" tires, so check the date code.

Tranny gears or middle drive? Either way, still not worth much in the deal in my mind.

Why? is a question I'd be asking, sometimes when a bike is sold with an extra tranny its coz it needs it fitting, so 2nd/4th gear could be cooked (cooked with a capital F )

With a serious engine fault the bike is a scrapper/parts bike, $350 is being generous. .....unless its in really good condition and worth doing the work to sort the engine
