  • Lets play stump the panel

I was driving into town doing 45-50 a few miles and when I came up to the lights and down shifted the RPM's wouldn't drop below 4k. Tried reving it up thinking the cable was stuck and no luck, they stayed at 4k+. I turned it off and put in neutral and started it, ran it in 1st and 2nd to a gas staion, got gas and started it up again and it seemed ok, ran a couple errands and headed home.
I could feel the bike wasn't rolling freely, something is pulling or grabbing.
My mechanic is in Michigan at some races so I couldn't stop in and have him look. Way to f up a great day . I guess I'm wondering if the 2 problems are related or separate and what to look for. I'm bummed. The bike has been so good up till now. Anyone? Thanks.

I'd say you have 2 separate issues. The first is an intermittantly-stuck throttle cable or butterflies on the carbs. The second may be sticking brakes. YOu can check the brakes easily on the Centerstand by lifting the wheel and spinning it. The carbs may just be telling you to lube your throttle cable, or it may be just a one-time thing that never comes back.

Went back out and it seemed to loosen up, took it a few blocks and down a little incline and could still feel some grabbing, put er up on the stand and the front wheel will turn but can feel the brakes or something hampering it.
it turns but not freely. Was hoping to catch up with Dragon and the lost rally clan at some point but now in doubt about it.

Put bike on centerstand, pull lock pin on front brake pad slide bolt and pull it out, clean and use some light oil (like gun oil) on the shaft and replace.

I have found grabby brakes to be one of two things:

That slide bar is not clean and lubed and pads stick instead of movng easily back and forth.

Other reason is spooge hole in master cylinder gets partially clogged and as you ride and fluid gets hot and expands, it gets into the caliper but not back out and brakes are sticky. Letting brake system normalize temps means next time it seems ok until after more riding.

You may be lucky and just have first problem. Cleaning MC is only a tiny bit more involved.

          Sounds

Like your throttle shafts is hung up. Not sure when you had the carbs off last but you'd be surprised at how much crap builds up between two and three carbs in a relatively short period of time.
I just had the same problem with my front left caliber. Didn't. Notice any dragging until I pulled in for gas and moved the bike to free. Up the pumps without my helmet on and heard squeaking. Had someone sit on the back of the bike so I could rotate the front wheel. I could hardly turn it. Drove the two miles back to my place and pulled the calibers and found the piston in the left one was pitted and very rusty. Still can't figure out why only one is bad. The thing that puzzles me is that I just finished rebuilding these less than 3k miles ago.The pitting wasbad enough to prevent the piston to relax the pads.

I couldn't budge the nuts to take the brakes off so I took some Citrol and sprayed some in the slot and just worked the brake lever for a bit. The wheel freed up thankfully. Citrol is a awsome product, I use to use it to take paint off my hands. Its nontoxic and good for a ton of things. On a different note I checked my gear levels, the middle was low and the back was almost filled to the top. Ticked me off because the guy I got it from said he had it all checked out before he brought it down. I'd like to kick him in the balls right now.

If ya didn't do it yourself (or ay least supervise) it wasn't done (right)!

Wish you could have made it down here to the lost rally. We are all getting packed up and heading home soon now.

Thanks Nate, I wish I had been able to make it down too, I just had reservations about the bike and didn't want to risk the drive or end up on the side of the road. Been there lol. I'm looking forward to meeting you guys and again want to say thanks for the invite and hospitality.

We will be doing a "Fall Color Run" up toward you in a month or two. No hard plans or date set as of yet but will be soon. I will keep you posted and also touch base with you as we firm up the plans for some input.

If there are more than three bolts holding it on there, it is most likely a very important part!

If it's not the brakes, that dragging may be coming from the middle gear bearings. It comes and goes with engine temp. Until the rear wheel locks up without warning.
