my bike gets worst mileage than my wifes car. im getting about 25 to 27 mpg. thats about all in town riding. my bike is a xj with k&n pod filters. the plugs look good its runs awesome. all kinds of power. a little doggy under 3 grand but once over 4 grand you better hold on tight.all my oils are clean and new. the carbs have been synced. im wondering if thats the best its going to get.

Naaah, you could get at least 35 out of it. From what I have read here, going to pods throws a lot of things off with the airflow and mixtures. I get 35-38, but I have stock pipes, airbox, and newly rebuilt carbs.

I'm not certain about the XJ itself, but since it is the same drivet rain essentially as the 81 XS I own, it certainly should get low to mid 30s with the PODs. Now what you have not said is if you have stock exhaust with the POD filters.

Believe it or not, something as simple as spark plug gap can drasticaly shnge your millage. A few years ago, I left Cincinnati heading for Indianapolis with a fellow XSive on our Specials. Maybe a 100 mile trip. Within the range of a Specials tank. We got maybe half way there and he ran out of gas. Unfortunately, his fuel light was not working, and his filters had fallen otu of his petcocks we guessed, as he had no reserve. Anyway, when we got where we were going, he stated he tried to regap his plugs to compensate for another issue. Well, he fixed the gap in Indinapolis, what took two tanks to get there, took less than one to get home.

So, check your plug gaps, definitely tune and synch the carbs.

I was having the same problem with my wifes XJ1100 found that it was leeking gas. I thought at first that I had a hole in the tank but the petcocks didn't seal to the tank. I fixed that and milage went up to 35 - 38 mpg.

Might look into a past thread about 2-stoke oil, tcw3 specifically. My SF carbs haven't been off for about 3 yrs and mileage dropped from 40 to 32. Followed suggestion 1 oz for 5 gallons and it has come up to 39. I believe it does not fix a poorly tuned system but does clean up a well tuned system that has suffered a few years of ethanol poisoning. My 85 F150 likes it too without question.

                2 stroke oil

I use regular unleaded with tcw3 2 stroke oil added in. Been using the oil for about 7 tank full's mileage is better than it was when it was new. Sold on this stuff.

Absolutely DO NOT run Ethanol blended gas in the 1100. I tried a tankful of E-10 the other day and it really made a difference in the performance AND mileage.

After running neck and neck with an F250 full of yokels at a stoplight, I confirmed that the E-10 robbed me of some serious "oomph". The old "butt-dyno(tm)" could really feel the power loss in on-ramps too.

Also had to give it more throttle on the interstate. So, my mileage suffered quite a bit. I usually get 100 miles from a tank before I fill up again, but with the E-10, I managed about 60.

I refilled with nice straight 87 octane no alky and my old friend is back and as snappy as ever. Put on 150 miles yesterday and got a nice sunburn to show for it.

Running straight 87 octane I figure I get about 25-30 on average. Ethanol gas drops that down to 20-25. I do alot of interstate driving and those 4 carbys are thirsty!

Ethanol is coming to everyone so might as well accept it. It is easier to tune to the ethanol and to be rewarded with non ethanol fuel than to tune to non ethanol fuel and find out you can't get it on a trip. Very few gas stations have ethanol free gas anymore.
