  • XJ luggage rack

Does anyone know if a luggage rack from an XJ 750 or 650 will fit an XJ1100?

I haven't seen any XJ1100 luggage racks on ebay lately but I have seen some for other XJ bikes. Thanks.

    Me, too

I have been looking for one too and have, as yet, been unsuccessful. I decided to personalize mine more and make my own. I bought 6' of 3/8" SS rod and am going to give it a go. A fella at work can teach me how to TIG SS.

      XJ Luggage rack

      Hey,

Good luck. If you have good results make another one and tell me what you want for it. You could probably sell 5 or 10 of them on this website.

I found an MC salvage yard in Kansas called Oz Pwersports that will try to find a rack for $295. What they do is go and find an XJ1100 in their yard and then go through all the luggage racks they have to see if one fits.

It's a terrible price with absolutely no guarantee of success but I might try it anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I've mentioned this before, but have you looked at racks from other bikes? The one I put on my XJ was from a Honda. I don't know what model, though, as the rack was off and sitting in a boneyard near Madison, WI and the people didn't remember what they took it off of. Maybe a 650, they thought. The pocket on the back of the back rest says Honda and is zippered. Back rest is one of those that is adjustable front and back.

My recollection (from 12 years ago) is that I had to modify the lower legs to work with the Vetter luggage hardware but it was nothing major. The other mod I made was the rack was to long for my tastes. The bars are rectangular shape with plastic inserts. I removed the inserts, cut the bars a little shorter, then reinstalled the inserts. Looks factory stock.

Have been running that rack ever since, although I took a lot of good-natured comments about having a Honda rack on a Yamaha. Probably should have removed the zippered pocket but found it handy to carry small items.

Sorry I can not tell you which Honda it is off. I had some measurements with me and this one appeared to be fairly close so I gambled on it. Got lucky and it worked out OK.

I've thought about making racks for the XJ, I made the one that is on mine. I didn't go very far with the idea because I figured it would cost more than you guys would want to pay. I could certainly do better than $295 for one. It might cost that if you wanted chrome, but not because of my labor or the materials.

            Larry,

How bout some pictures of that rack? I'm hoping to find one that does not require removal of the XJ's stock seat rail.

I just made one, but you'd need a welder. Attaches using the current bolts. Fits inside the grab rail on the top mounts using the top grab rail/backrest bolts and outside on the bottom mounts. May not be chrome, but it's been functional for several years now and carried lots and lots of stuff over the years. Now I have a trunk mounted to it, so I had to weld on a couple more supports under the table section last week to mount the trunk to.

I guess my point is... if someone doesn't have what you want, figure out what you need and make it yourself. You can get it chromed if that's what tickles you.

This is the one I made for my XJ, without the trunk installed. If I was going to make racks to sell, they would be different with no backrest.

                    Yahman,

What do you want for your rack. I am tired of looking. I was prepared to spend $295 with no gaurantee of success (although I suspect they'd send me something I would have to modify anyway). I'd rather just pay for something I know will work. I think not having chrome is a bonus.

I'm serious, tell me what you want for it if you are interested in selling. If not, tell me what you'd charge to make one for me. Thanks.

                        Garden chairs

Old rusty ones at garage sales. Each one with yards of steel tube and several really nice 90º bends in them that allow a far better looking rack than trying to bend steel tube yourself. My last purchase; $2 for 6 of them.
                        Cut'n'weld to suit.

Here's the jerrycan rack and the main folding rack on my sidecar.
From 6 feet away you can hardly see the welds that give them that rustic bamboo look.
