  • Speedometer issues.

I was told I just needed a new cable, replaced it and it wasn't the problem.
I removed the speedo/tac mount to install and found the seal around the speedometer was missing pretty much telling me he knew it wasn't the cable. I've seen other posts here saying theirs wasn't working and was wondering is this common on these models? Looks like they go for a 100 bucks on ebay.
Anyone have any luck repairing them or is it just a throw away and replace thing?

The 'seal' around the speedo is called a damper and it's there to soften the vibrations while the speedo sits inside the cup/housing.

Here's a thread that I did talking about swaping out speedo internals.

It should be noted that if his 'H' still has the OEM square gauges, his only choice for a matching replacement will be a '78-81 standard square speedo, with the '78-79 versions being the 160 mph ones.

There are companies that can rebuild/repair your original unit, but don't expect it to be cheap...

I would also make sure that the drive on the front wheel hasn't stripped the pinion gear...I have had some parts failures in that area before.

Good point, with the cable connected to the gear at the wheel lift up the front end and spin the wheel to see if the cable even spins.
