Nick, I think I might need to clarify myself a little.
When I had a hole in my #4 piston, (Before I knew it was actually there) I knew my compression was toast, so I did like you and put a little capful in there to see if the numbers would come up. They didn't, so I filled the cylinder full with oil and used a 'dipstick' in the spark plug hole to see what the level was. Of course it drained out rather quickly so I knew that it was more than just leaking past the rings. Then I pulled the head and saw the hole.

Obviously, you've already eyed your pistons and know that #3 has no hole, so that's good.

What I suggested to you was, with the head off, you can see the level of oil in the #3 cylinder (and use #1 as a reference level) then you can see if the oil drains past the rings faster in #3 than in #1. If you start with the same amount of oil in each, then hopefully they both drain at the same rate.

Also if/when you get #3 to bottom dead center, then you can look at the cylinder walls for any obvious scoring or damage.

Just make sure that you get #1 back to Top Dead Center before you go putting the head back on.

This might all be a moot point if you DO find something with the valves/head on #3.

Just trying to help. I've been in your shoes before and don't want you to get too discouraged.

You certainly want to investigate the lack of compression, and will most likely find a bent valve in there. So keep on that task for now.

However, in my experience, and XS11 will run with one dead cylinder. I have seen it more than once that folks switch the coil feeds from the TCI and the bike will not start to save your life. Not to sound like a broken record, Just added thought on why no start. They all four will have spark, just none when they need it.

Keep in mind, if you did not check before you pulled the coils off, the wires might actually NEED to be swapped from factory color coding for the bike to run. If someone swapped out or worked on the pick up coils and got them in backwards, your TCI will fire the coils backwards, requiring you to swap the orange and grey wires. Since the red/white is the same to both coils, just swap the connectors.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.
