  • tires, how old is too old?

When I got back in to biking 10 years ago, I scored a deal on 3 new 17" Avon rear tires. My experience was that big bikes eat up rear tires and I'd go through these quick. Well, I only used one and now I have 2 new old tires that I just can't bring myself to toss... Should I just suck up some courage and toss them or are they good enough to give away?

    Geezer

Got a picture, are they showing any weather checking? I dont think anyone can give you a set amount of time when the tire expires... Front tires usually last about 3 to 4 seasons and possibility more for some. If the tire is 5 years old and shows no sign of checking then I would use it, anything beyond that and I would start getting concerned. If they areare checked and want to donate a tire to me I will happily use it for burnouts!

I wouldn't personally use one on one of my bikes, I agree with the MFG that they seem to get 'hard' after several years, new or not, and I like the twisties too much...

However, I wouldn't hesitate to let someone either here on the forum or on craigslist make that decision for themselves, got to be better than some of the tires I've seen folks rolling around on, with the cords showing and mostly |_| square like a car tire!

They've been stored inside in a dark closet. If you didn't already know they were old stock, you couldn't tell by looking at them.

I'll give them away but, I won't ship them.

If they have been stored well they should be fine.

Back when I worked on bikes all the time I had a bunch of tires I used to keep around, as long as I kept them indoors they didn't have anything go wrong with them. it's when you leave them outside in the elements and they get hot then cold then hot, that would cause them to become brittle and start checking.
