  • Mid and final lubes.

What are the current recommended lubes for the mid and final drives? I know what the manual says but with changes over the last 30 years and synthetics I wasnt sure if there was anything better than the old info.

Alot if not most folks are running synthetic in the mid and final drives. No issue with clutches in those areas, so no detrimental effects.

Is it the same 80-90 for the mid or is the synthetic a different weight? And for the final is that just axle grease or am I looking for something special? I see regular old axle grease, brake, bearing, ect and a "red" grease. I hate to admit I have no idea what the differences are.

I use 75/140 synthetic year round. In both drives.

I had Mobil 1 75W90 in my gearboxes for some time. Last change, I serviced them with Royal Purple 75W140 as recommended here. No metal in the last change, and everything is still quiet with the new stuff.

As I recall, it's moly grease that goes on the splines, but even butter would be better than leaving it dry.

I believe moly grease is the proper choice under high pressure loads.

Yep. Got the throttle cable (which is still about half an inch too long even after adjustment) and the banjo bolt. Everything is put back together. Putting new tires on tomorrow night.

I made one out of a BiC pen. Fits perfect now.
