Topped out and cant reach redline in 5th gear... The other night I had a 90's Cadillac walk away from me and it left me wondering (among others) why cant I reach redline in 5th gear? My valve clearances are within spec now and the bike pulls strong in ever gear right to redline except 5th. It just seems to hit a wall and wont pull anymore then about 7300 RPM in 5th. When at WOT does carb sync come into play? Any advice to get the last drop? When I get a change Im going to pull the carbs and check float height.

Main Jets are the only other idea I have. You really are relying on those jets at that RPM. But float height will make a difference.

Well, spark can play a part, if your coils are slightly weak you could not be getting a hot enough spark to give full power at that point.

That's about 120 mph Wade. How fast do you want to go?

          Drop the ballast!

I think the thing that slows me is the "sprung" weight I carry

Of course I usually only drive no faster than 65 mph!

Even when brand new, these bikes topped out at about 135, and getting that last 10-15 mph took some distance. My '78 could pull to a bit over 135 indicated (probably about 125 actual) in fifth, but it took at least a mile to get the last 10 mph....

100% ditto. Same with my new 79. I did exactly the same thing.

It seems to me that asking for more than 120mph on a bike of that age is asking for trouble.

BTW Steve, I feel a poll coming on.......

The only thing I have to add is something I read on here some time ago. To get the maximum pull out of it, never let the RPMs drop below 5k, even between shifts.

Pushing a lot of air once you reach triple digits. I had my '03 V-Rod reading 135 and it was a chore to stay on it, forward controls are not made for that! My XS is my work truck, it's not safety tested for those speeds!

I've gotten about 125 out of mine in the right conditions. I had to shift down to 4th though because I have the FD mod. In 5th I can only get about 105.

That's a lot of wind resistance for these old carbureted work horses the overcome. They aren't really aerodynamic.

my 2cents. Even race cars do not pull redline in top gear.
XS max horsepower is at around 7200rpm. Horsepower is what gives you speed. Less weight and no wind would help to go faster.

The exhaust you may be running is also a factor in this equation. I have found that 4 into 1 is different than a 4 into 2 for aftermarket exhaust. I had no problem with the 135mph with the stock exhaust but find that my Jardine spaghetti's will run out of steam before that. I still will try another bigger set of jets to see if that corrects it but getting up to 145 mains just seems like it will cost me mileage.

u could try bumping up the main jet
by a size or 2 and make sure ur float
heights arent adjusted on the leaner side

I have the stock 4-2 installed currently... I think its time to check the float height. I think we both could stand to lose a few pounds, I just wish I could unbolt mine.

I have been trying to snipe a set of those Accel coils, Im sure the original ignition wires are at the end of their life...
