The owner must have bought that fairly recently (within the last six months?) as it was advertised at least that recently on the east coast (and multiple times before it sold). This guy has upped the price by $2K and it makes you wonder that it's already for sale again. Disappointing performance? Spent money he didn't have? IIRC, somebody here went and looked at it and said the bike wouldn't run under 2K rpm and didn't make real power until 4K.

      Turbo

Yep.. Steve I believe that you are right. I think this bike was originally in Maine. I remember this because I was interested in adding to my collection but the owner did not want to barter.

Not my cup of tea, old boy. I'd rather have nitrous than all that pipework everywhere. And I bet a turbo isn't anything like as fast as nitrous either (albeit cheaper to run).

Biggest difference I see between turbo and nitrous is that your turbo is making boost all the time - and with nitrous you can choose when to use it.

You have to get the bottles filled regularly of course. I liked it on my XS1100 because, as you've mentioned, one has the choice and it's an easily reversible modification. The nitrous makes the engine run cooler than with a turbo.

              Hey James,

Do you have any photos of your setup? Would you mind describing how to do this mod? A recent thread talked about getting the last 15 mph out of the topend without a mile + runout! Did you use the OEM synch ports, or did you add extra ports to the intake boots, or where did you put the NO2 injection nozzles?

                Turbo

Why not both. It sounds like the bomb to have both a turbo and nitrous. I second what TC said. If we could get some pics and basic instructions, we might have some better talking points.

                  James,

What was the top speed you achieved with your NO2 setup? Or, did you just use it from stop light to stop light..? I'd be scared about hitting false neutral!

Unfortunately no pix! There are two nozzles per manifold. One for gasoline and the other for nitrous. I drilled the intake boots and then you put the gas nozzle in front of the nitrous one, so that the nitrous pushes the fuel in. Running out of gasoline with nitrous systems is catastrophic and creates a burning torch which wrecks the engine. So, the fuel taps need drilling out to enable both the reserve and the normal 'on' position to work simultaneously and it's advisable to remove the vacuum element of the fuel tap so that it operates all the time. You just turn the fuel to 'off' when not in use.

The actual activating solenoids, one for nitrous and one for gasoline, can be mounted anywhere on the bike but the nearer the manifolds, the better. This cuts down on time lag for the fuel to get to the manifold, especially. I used blue tubing for the nitrous line, along with a blue solenoid, and red for the gasoline. They share a common, fused power supply. The fuel operates on gravity and the nitrous from the bottle. I fitted a microswitch on the carbs so that, at full throttle, it was tripped by the throttle cable wheel thing.

When the microswitch is activated, it opens both solenoids. Fuel enters the manifold and the nitrous is blasted down the tube.

If I did it again, I would have the nitrous solenoid wired up so that it could only activate if the fuel solenoid had actually worked. Nitrous with no gasoline increase is disastrous.

As a modification, it's excellent. I'm sure it would beat a turbo any day. The turbo is only ramming more fuel in. The nitrous does that + the nitrous oxide.

The XS1100 is impossible to wheelie on nitrous. It just pushes the swingarm harder onto the road, lifts the backend of the bike and produces huge amounts of power. I seem to recall on a Dyno test that my bike accelerated from 60mph to 120mph in approx 2.5 seconds. The nitrous can also be used to power a gearshifter although, knowing the XS11's penchant for jumping out of gear in 1st and 2nd, I didn't fit one!

I would highly recommend using nitrous on an XS1100.

The thing that bugs me the most about the ad for the turbo is he claims it will embarass a new sport bike. COMPLETE false advertising. It might get a 600 in the quarter, might, but it won't touch a 1000, no way. 220 hp probably wouldn't get that job done on a heavy XS.

In the youtube video the turbo wasn't working. The boost pressure maintained negative and only reached 0 when the throttle was opened. It never actually went to positive gauge pressure. And of course there was no turbo spin up sound
