  • air filters

hi guys, my stock air box was badly cut by the PO. He cut out the two longer bolt tubes that hold the lower section and air filter so now it does not seal tight. Which pod type should i use as i have heard there are some out there that aren't up to scratch and starve the engine of air. Will i need to jet the carbs on my '81 1100H Thanks. Vic.

Personally, I would just get a new airbox.

I hear the pods from mikesxs are ok, and of course the real k&n filter are good too.

I believe the EMGO pods are the ones that require an adaptor to keep them from blocking the inlet bell ports on the carbs.

You may or may not need to rejet. I would get the PODs installed, then see how the engine performs with them. If it is running lean, you will know you need to rejet.

Here is a link that tells you how to make adapters for the cheap pod filters from the stock airbox since its already butchered. I think the K&N pods are the ones that don't require the adapters. There may be other brands as well but I would use the adapters anyways because you have that airbox that is already messed up. If you don't want to use the stock tubes then I will buy the tubes from your airbox so I won't destroy mine.

Not all EMGO pod filters are bad. I have some that don't have the square shoulder on the inside that causes the problem. I got them on fleabay several years ago. I'm back to a modified air box because I like the looks better.

Just went that route rebuilt my carbs and installed pods learned a LOT! With the help of this forum. You will not have to rejet. Can't put a price on instant access to carbs and filters. And I like the looks. And you are not altering the bike in any manner that would prevent you from going back to stock if you wish to do so.

I think i might go with the pods. Do you know the brand name of the ones you are using on your bike? I'll try to find those ones if possible. Thanks guys.

                    Hi Vic,
we use the oval pleated pod filters from MikesXS that say XS on their back covers.
They don't block the outer carb holes and work just fine.
Of the original 9 (XS650; XS750; XS11 ) the rear cover fell off of one of the 3 on the XS750 which was definitely a quality problem
and the one on the Pumpkin's #1 cylinder fell off on the street in B.C., most likely due to Mr Stupid doing a less than perfect install.

They are EMGO but I don't know the number, it was several years ago. They are the little round ones, too small in my opinion, and you would be taking a chance on getting the ones with the wrong (square) shoulder that causes the problem others are talking about. If I were to do it agian I would buy the larger Mikes pods. They have a lot more surface area so less restriction. Wish I could help you better.
