Pickup coil wires could be wet and shorting out, Coils could be cracked and wet.
Let it all dry out and see if it goes back to normal, then you know you have something shorting when things are wet and then it is time to hunt!Nathan

It sounds like the insulation on your pickup coil wires is cracked and shorting out on the heutral light switch wire. Its in the same wireloom under the left frame rail. When you put it in gear the pickup wires are grounding through the neutral light switch. When you put it in gear and the light goes out the bike will die.
It'll be OK when it dries out. If you get under there with a small phillips and loosen the neutral light wire and disconnect it the bike should run ok then. You can hook it back up when things dry out.Greg

If the harness gets wet near the neutral switch wire, you can lose 1 coil when the bike is in gear but not in neutral. It usually will die when dropped down into first. If you ground the neutral wire, the light will come on and stay on but the bike will run on all 4, this is good to know if you're caught out on the road. I grounded the neutral wire under one of the allen bolts on the shifter cover one time just to get home. It's a good idea to try to waterproof that section of the harness, I did it by eliminating the neutral wire and it's leaky switch for good, just have to be careful without the light, my 2¢,
Let your bike dry out overnight and you probably be ok.Last edited by bikerphil; 07-21-2012, 11:47 PM.2H7 (79) owned since '89
