Please help

I have an 81 xs 1100 special. It take alot of oil but the exhaut is very normal im colour. My gas milleage is very poor. After riding for a while my bike runs very poorly. I shut it down for a few minutes then it runs fine.

Can u please help me fix it cause i want to go to motorcycle rally in Bozeman in August

Shark, you're going to have to be a bit more giving in info about your bike for us to be able to suggest where to look!!!

Did you just get the bike, or have you had it a long time? There are so many systems that need to be checked and cleaned. You say it uses alot of oil, yet the exhaust doesn't look smoky! Is there a lot of oil leaking out the front of the engine around the cam chain tensioner plug....common spot for loss of oil while running engine.

Runs poorly! Checked air filter, plugs, cam chain tension, battery connections, carbs, compression test??? Better description on "runs poorly", like does it miss, or seem to run out of power at certain RPMs, or just seems to loose power as it warms up or after driving for so many miles......need specifics!!!!!

What maintainance have you done to it lately, or at all?? We need input before we can come up with
"Intelligent Suggestions"!

The first thing that leaps to mind is a plugged gas cap vent. That can cause fuel starvation till the bike sits for a while and the vacuum created by drawing fuel from the tank dissipates. But, as TC notes, there are lots of other things that cold be causing trouble. Let the fun begin...
