Starter and Alternator Brushes

Hello,

I recently had a battery problem. (New Mexican desert heat made my 2 year old battery die!!) Before I went and bought a new battery from WalMart, I took apart my starter to check it. It was pretty dirty. While cleaning it I noticed that the starter brushes will need to be replaced soon.

Now here is my question. How often are the brushes normally replaced in the alternator and the starter? I plan to buy the brushes from Zanotti motors for the starter. I was wonder should I go ahead and buy the brushes for the alternator also. (I have not had the time to take a look at the alternator brushes, but I suspect if the starter one are get close the alternator ones could not be far behind!)

Besides Zanotti Motors (who are excellent) does anyone else make brushes?

How many miles are on your XJ, Norm?

I looked at my alternator brushes at about 25K miles,
they seemed to have a lot of life left in them.

I haven't checked the starter tho...

Mine's at 35k.

I seem to remember that my alt brushes were worn
surprisingly little. The service schedule recommends
replacing at a ridiculously short interval

When you look at your alt brushes, let us know,
we can establish a reasonable service interval.

brushes on starter and alternator

Hello,

I finally got my parts from Zanotti motors. I replaced the brushes on the starter. Boy did it need it. The alternator brushes were not too far worn. But I replaced them anyway. I do not know if they were original, I suspect not. I suggest replacing all the brushes at the same time. My reasoning behind that thought is, the job is so simple. Also, all the electrical parts are all interrelated. Not only that it only cost about $36.00 in parts for the whole job. I believe in preventive maintenance!!
