  • Mystery Plugs on new harness

Who has knowledge about wiring harness issues on 1979 xs1100? I have 2 plugs on a new harness install that are a mystery.

Standard or Special? If you have 'extra' plugs, the replacement harness isn't the same year/model. There's considerable variation in the harnesses...

Where are they, and what colors are the wires that are hooked to them?

I checked the serial nuimber on the new harness and it is for my model and year, 1979 xs1100sf.

Here is the link to a picture of mystery plug number #1. 2 red wires. One wire goes to the key switch and the other red goes to the battery.

Here is the link to a picture of mystery plug #2. Four wires - Four wire colors are gray, black with white and 2 wires red with white. One red with white goes to the starter.

the big red plug goes to the fuse under the left side cover. if plug 2 is laid out in the correct position it may be for your tail lights but I'm not certain

          You have the wrong harness....

I can see the harness label in one of your pics and the first three digits are 4R0, which identifies that as a '81 Special harness. Lot of electrical differences between the '78-79 and '80-81 bikes. The 'red' plug should go to a 'main' fuse (which wasn't in the fuse panel on the later bikes) which you don't have.

The other one I'm not sure; those are all ignition/starting system wire colors, and if that 'gray' is actually a blue/white then that may be the plug for the right-hand handlebar controls.

            thanks

I read the later series of numbers on the harness label. Wow my mistake. Anyway I bought the harness with no burns on it for $15 at a swap meet. I guess I will pay in extra labor. Thanks for the tips.

Sound like you know a lot about these bikes. I will be on the carburetors next. Would you e-mail me your phone number for some consultation time on the clock? ken@solacegraphics.com
