There is a guy on fleabay selling a folding kick start lever. If i had an extra 100 bucks i would get it.

And be careful of what he sends you, he's showing two different types, the cranked lever from an XS750 Special and the straight one from RD250/400.

Her's an easy way to tell if you have to go internally to add the shaft and pawl parts. Lean the bike over, to the left, way over, take off the clutch housing, and you will see a cover to the seven o'clock position of the clutch basket. Abour 2.5 inches in diameter, with thre bolts. take the bolts out, and the top right one will tax your ingenuity. Take the cover out, and look inside. If you can see the bottom few teeth of a gear, you are golden. Get the parts that plug into the hole, and your are done. Good luck. CZ

fred, i'll post some pics as soon as i learn how to do it. i'm not much of a computer guy.. i've tried taping pictures to the screen of my monitor but for some reason nobody else can see 'em. go figure. as for my size-to-kickstart ratio i'm 5'6" and i weigh 160 (very fit and rock hard) pounds. the bike i just sold was a museum quality 1979 SR500 and one of the reasons i sold it was the lack of an electric starter and my 63 year old knees. so i think if i could start that thing every time('cause i had to) then i could kick start the xs1100 occasionally('cause it's cool). but, perhaps you're right fred. maybe i'll just talk 2 of my regular riding buddies into following me around all the time just in case i ever need a push start. if i promise to buy them adult beverages it shouldn't be a problem! we'll see.

Once I replaced my rect/reg right after buying my bike, and other than when the battery that came in it when I bought it died, I've never had any trouble electric starting mine in the 3 years I've owned mine. It's been the most reliably starting bike I've owned, with never a problem with it starting.

did you try taping them with the photo side facing inwards?
Failing that go to the Forum How To and there's a "how to do that" in there.
The photos have to be on Photobucket or similar public forum to make it to here.
Gawd man, if even I can do it, so should you.
If your 160 lbs of rock hardness was modestly concealed beneath 60 lbs of body fat like mine is you'd have the mass to kickstart, no problem.
Not that you'll need to. Except for very rare instances it's as you say, just kickstarting to look cool.

Shouldn't need too much luck with the BIN sales

One to watch, the straight levers may foul the footrests, brake lever, and exhaust. The cranked out XS650 lever is the better option on a standard-ish bike.

My bike has rearset footrests and folding brake lever and minimal exhaust so the straight kicker is Ok

hey fred, i'll try turning the pics around on my monitor. if that fails, i'll try reading the instructions on the how to page. i normally read instructions as a last resort. i just figured out how to get one of my pics as an avatar so posting pics can't be far behind!

These bikes are fairly easy to kick over. I'm a buck and a half, soaking wet with pockets fulla change, and the lever doesn't put up that much resistance. I don't kick the 11 very often, but sometimes i do just for the fun of it. It's nice to have the choice of electric boot or the real thing. The sounds of a motor starting without the whine and clash of an electric starter is magical. But the ease of pushing a button has it's good points!

If ya want something to compare the XS kickstart to, try an old Sportster. The girl's bike. The early Sportys had high compression, magneto ignitions, and fixed advance - they are a bear to kick. Being thrown over the handlebars is not an urban legend. It happens...even today.

If ya wanna kicker, go for it. Take lotsa pics and post 'em up. I like learnin' new stuff about the XS.
