  • Help identifying parts year model

Hello from a new member . I have a new to me, 13k mile 1980 XS1100G and don't believe this Berg Custom Saddle seat pan is actually for the 80G model . The rub marks on the manufactures tag along with the plastic Yamaha part attached to it makes me think it was for a 78-79 maybe ?

The deal is, i need a new seat and a 1980G model grab rail is why i am asking and didn't want do all the work for new foam and seat cover if i am starting with the wrong seat pan from the get go. I am trying to get this bike back to just being a standard XS11G model --just getting started in the learning of parts/year model differences ect.

While i am asking, and just out of pure curiosity since i won't be using this fairing , is this a Yamaha accessory fairing by Vetter ? I ask because of ""Yamaha"" is on the wiring connector plate .

I too have an 80G and have asked this same question before.
My seat is very similar to yours. (but different manufacturer)
Here's a good thread that crazy steve came up with about seat interchangablilty:
    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36552
It shows the different kinds of seats for the various models.

Looking at you pics, It looks like that seat is for a 78/79 standard. (just like mine minus the plastic cowling on the rear) Others here would greatly desire that seat, so a swap with someone may be in your future.

Is your seat 'crushing' down on your TCI? Mine has pushed mine down enough to crack the inner plastic rear fender.

The faring is indeed vetter made for yamaha. Nice looking too. If you weren't so far away, I'd pay you for the fairing.

Definitely a 78-79 standard seat. I think I kinda like it! Might be interested in it!

And also, yes that is vetter made for yamaha.

Thanks for the replies . I bought the bike not running and just went out and saw that the two ignition box bolts were out . I installed one bolt to hold it in position and now the seat won't go on. So now i know why the box was loose to start with.

I was also wondering why the round cushion rubbers looked new and new word here < unsmashed > . He he , they never touched another surface and the seat tag took the beating instead.

Have i just gotten myself into a new life of weekly Ebay shopping?

Here is a pic of an 80g xs11 standard.

78 and 79 standards had the plastic cowl on the seat like you have and the cdi on the rear fender {chrome part}....I believe 80 and 81 standards had the cdi up on the plastic inner fender like the specials. Look on the black plastic part of the fender, there should be two holes that are a little raised up under the seat.
I think factory colors for the 80 standard were two color like the pic and burgundy with a pin stripe. If you buy a new seat on ebay make sure it's for a standard. 1980 standard and special seats look about the same only the special has the rear section cut higher so the brake light fits under it......the standard comes all the way down to the fender. Also the front of the seats are shaped a little different because of tank shape.

At least your inner fender is probably still good and with that good seat rubbers, that seat will be even more coveted by other members here looking for a very nice one.

By the looks of the faring and seat, the PO looks to have taken pretty good care of it, so there may not be many other items that have been "PO'd"

In the tech tip section, there's a thread on what to look for when going over a 'new to you' bike. Heck, I've had mine for 7+ years and I still find a little something every now and then. (That's part of the fun of owning one of these fine machines)
Ebay can be okay, but be wary. The members here should be your first choice for parts. A lot of times you may get something for shipping only. (or at least cost) There are also a few online suppliers that have some decent stuff too. (MikeXS, GeorgeFix, Boats.net, BikeBandit.com, ...etc.) Shop around and ask around here and you'll get a lot of advice and help.

              Hi Curtis and welcome,
what they said, it's a '79 seat trying to fit an '80 bike. It won't because the '80's different ignition box position puts it in the way.
What I'd try is extending all the wiring so the box can fit under the seat's plastic rear fairing and the seat can fit down onto it's rubber stops.
2 patches of Velcro stuck to the fairing and a Velcro strap to hold it should keep the box secure.
That or leave the box where it is and cut a window in the seat pan and hog out the foam to make a pocket for the box to fit in.

If you are ordering a new seat order it from Diamond, tell them the year and model plus your weight and inseam and the y will supply the pan.
