  • Darn pod filters ruined my sunday drive.

Got my xs1100sf running good, fresh oil and filter, 2 brand new Dunlopn tires took it out for a test drive on Saturday after putting a new-2-me (Read Salvaged) Stator assy, everything working right, Autozone has a $10 Rebate when you buy 4 NGK Iridium Plugs at $6.99 each, so I put 4 new Iridium plugs in and slapped the pod filters on to go for a ride with a friend of mine, and it was running like junk, all kinds of hesitation had to baby it to get it to go above 75 mph, and take off was awfull. Turns out that the pod filters were the culprit, they had a big lip on the inside of the rubber mount that was covering some of the small holes on the outside edge of the carbs. Took off the pods and went out for a ride this evening, night and day, baby was screaming!
I'm going to put the airbox back on, at least I won;t have to worry about any oil coming out of the crank case breather hose and getting on anything either.

I was VERY close to buying a set of pods off eBay last year since they were so cheap ($20 or so) but luckily I read about the problem with the lips and decided to either wait and buy the correct ones or just not buy any at all. Ended up not getting any at all because I have spent quite a bit of time getting my bike to run halfway decent and am afraid a set of pods (even without the lip) would throw my carb tuning out of whack and I'd end up having to rejet and screw around with the carbs for another Summer. I think you might be making the right decision by going back to the stock airbox even if it's not as nice looking and makes it harder to remove the carbs.

        I had the same problem

I had the same problem with my 78 bobber. Those holes need to be totally
uncovered. Mikesxs sells a oval filter with xs on the end. Totally fixed it. They have a velocity stack tube built into the middle so your carbs can breath. They were about $16 each when I got them. One of the other guys on here can tell you what size to get, I know there have been threads. Crazy Steve seems to have the answers most of the time. If nobody steps up with the info I'll hunt down the advise that I used.

          It was the cheapo pods.

Yeah I'm 100% sure it was the El Cheapo pods that were the culprit, I like the way yours look way better anyways, plus they don;t sound much more expensive, I paid $10 each for the el cheapo's, and if it screams with nothng on there then I shouldn;t havbe any problem with a pod filter as long as it doesn;t cover those little holes.

I would also like to know if anyone has a how-to guide to shortening up a fender like yours in that pic, very very interested in knowing how to do that,
Thats the exact look I would like to get on the rear of my bike,

I avoided this problem by buying the genuine article real K+N pod filters...as alot of the knockoffs have this problem...You get what you pay for...people here like to get stuff on the cheap...and its great to be able to save money until you have to replace some cheap part that failed for the better quality stuff they should have bought the 1st time around...if they did there wouldnt be a 2nd time

A lot of people have also had problems with the Chrome cap or the filter (leaving the boot on the carb) falling off of the mikes pods.

If you do decide that you still want pods, I just ordered these cause i had the same problem that you are having. I'll be getting mine in the mail tomorrow (Hopefully) and i'll let you know how they are. It says right in the website article that there is no lip on the pod boots. I'm pretty excited, $80 before shipping.

The actual size that you need is 54mm however i talked to them and they said they got rid of the 52 and 54mm and started making the 53mm which is suppose to work on both. When i get them on, I'll let you know how they work if you're still interested
