  • Coil Swap

i was looking at ignition coil swaps, and was thinking of swapping a auto coil pack (out of an eclipse) when i decided to search google for a 3 ohm pack for automobiles. not exactly what i was looking for, but this is an interesting thread: http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/...odge+neon+coil
perhaps some electrical experts could chime in and let me know if this would be a bad idea from the get go.

You have to be careful using newer coils, as many are now designed for use only with ignitions that feature 'dwell control'. This limits the 'on' time of the coil to a set amount at all rpms, something our XS/XJ ignitions aren't capable of. What this means is the coils are 'on' the same amount of time for each firing cycle no matter the engine speed. With our ignitions, the 'on' time is longer at low speeds, less at high speeds. Too much 'on' time and the coils will burn up, possibly taking the TCI out with it....

Not saying these won't work, but they may not work all that long.

i know they spoke of using them on 80's series goldwings and a lot of the members mentioned them heating up so perhaps i'll just go with the accels. just wondered if it had been tried on the XS's but am not too interested in ruining my bike to find out...

I Put 3 ohm Firebalde coils on my girlfriends special years ago, dismissing the ballast resistor.(I have heaps of those coils lying around, but they should cost next to nothing) they have screw in spark plug cables and you can put on the XS caps. They only mount on one of the two existing mounting points, the other one I did with a tiewrap. Still runs like a dream, never missed a beat.

if my ebay bid-war doesn't go as expected i will have to look into them. Off subject but have you built any other bikes like your orange\silver turboed One, that bike is a work-of-art. think thats why i like these bikes more than the new cookie-cutters that come out of factories these days
