sorry - the boots between the carbs and the heads -- intake?

All I know is I was told "your boots need to be replaced," while said person pointed at the tiny cracks there.

Just because there are little cracks does not mean they need to be replaced. These are dual layer boots and they can have cracks in the outer layer that don't go into the inner layer and they are still fine. The only way to tell is to spray something flammable with the engine running around the boots (engine start fluid or something like that) and see if the engine idle speed changes, if it does they they are leaking and need replaced (or the gaskets are leaking). If you need to replace them are the same for the XJ1100 as for the XS1100.

There are several sources for the boots IF you decide you want or need to replace them...because they actually ARE leaking, or you just want nicer looking intakes.... CY, he does also ride a BEAMER!

Partsnmore.com, ebay, I think GeorgeFix on ebay, varying prices, but usually around $100.00 a set of 4.

As stated, if they are NOT leaking, you can dress them up also...think there are tech tips about this, from slathering on lots of black RTV, or spraying or painting on many layers of plastidip.

Thank you both. As I've posted elsewhere here, it had been running rough recently and a shop that is typically well respected here gave me two pieces of advice that have been questioned on this esteemed group:

needs a carb rebuild;
needs new boots.

I would be happier if it didn't really need either.

My friend Dan, an old bike expert, will be visiting in a couple of days and will help me figure out both.

I bought a few cans of Seafoam, and will try the boot test as Cy suggested.

(I had tried to sell my beautiful XJ due to back issues and poor suspension on these old bikes, but the bidding never got within my $2549 minimum, so I will keep it.)
