    It looks like a 79 special but isn't that a midnight motor.

      Frame manufacturing date WILL show 78 for a 79..........and a 79 that other one is as Nate stated.

          I do not think there is any question that his bike, the Macho Maroon one is a 78.

          The second one may be a 79 Special. The exhaust is a Special exhaust so the foot peg brackets have to be form a special, the forks are Special, the tank and seat are Special, Even all of the lights and gages are Special model round ones. So it is 80% that it is a Special. Now, as to the motor, my guess is someone painted it out black, removing the covers they could easily and polishing those. IIRC, even the GH models had the fins polished on the engine.
