  • Carb cracked!

I was having a hard time getting Rising Sun to run properly after replacing the kawasaki carbs with a set of XS carbs before I took it to my brother in law Tom (who is supposed to join here!)....and eventually took the set off Great Ranger and figured I would figure it out later.

Well its later, and I found a problem. One carb body had a crack in it.

I never noticed it cleaning them before but this time my finger ran across it and I could feel the ridge.

    Back of bowl near choke.

I thought about trying to fix it, but Im just gonna replace it with a spare. Otherwise I would always wonder when it might fail. (I was gonna try soldering)

Anyway if you just can tune them, check for cracks!

I have bought several kinds in past just for problems like this so this time I have stripped all four completely for another ultrasonic bath, gonna use only the best parts when going back together.

        Yes!

Interesting, that. I wonder what caused it?

          Splitting rack or dropped

I figure either sometime in past the rack was split up or it got dropped.

I had to break it off the rack and when I put them together they are getting allen screws!

I was thinking that could be tig welded, but then the way it goes through that lip that holds the slide diaphragm... It's still probably doable with a lot of dremmel work afterwards, but it would be a giant PITA and with a million Mikuni carbs out there, probably not worth it.

That crack missed everything that is a conduit to fuel. Heck, you could seal it with JB Weld ar almost anything. I wouldn't put anything in the groove that seals the diaphragm though.

                I may try

I might try if I just desperately need another body now that I am out of spares

I have a couple of messed up bodies around just to look at if I need to figure something out or for show and tell here. They come in pretty handy sometimes.

                    Good idea greg

Better than pulling them for pics or trusting memory!

I already stripped my bad bodies looking for parts to salvage. Not much, most jets were screwed up from POs or me

Got a few stock ones though to pass along as needed when time is right. Got my early carbs setup thanks to generosity from Richard (rpgoerlich) and will be paying it forward next rally.

I do need to get one of those right angle screwdrivers though...that was nifty and easy to make adjustments without raising tank.
