  • Cam chain

Today I finally got around to some routine maintainance on the new bike.

One of the things I did was to adjust the cam chain. Before the adjustment I would have occasional backfires, both through the exhaust and the carbs.

I did a test ride afterwords to make sure everything was good and not a single back fire. It it possible for the chain to be loose enough to cause backfires? Did the adjustment fix it or did I just happen to have a good run today?

I would head out and do some more testing but its heading up to 97 degrees today. Fat guys and heat dont mix.

.......and those backfires will happen again sooner than later........that stock adjuster with the 'wanna be' loc-bolt will NOT hold, and chain WILL loosen a bit, even if you can't tell right away. Read up here on the site using the auto adjuster, and get rid of that POS stock adjuster. A good decel WILL shove that plunger back a bit irregardless of the 'pinch' bolt. I've seen it happen several times on the center-stand with a quick blip of the throttle. Not worth the risk of jumpin time and the LEAST damage will be the top-end, bent valves, etc.

Well I just picked up this one. Looking at the list it seems this one should work. Was only 10 bucks and free priority shipping to boot.

I bought 2 of those. 1 is in my 79 and I just came in from installing the 2nd in my XJ. The XJ went in a lot tighter but it only has 11k miles. On both of the Raptor ACCTs I had to ream the holes towards center to get the bolts in but only by a little. I have not started the XJ as I'm allowing the sealer to dry. The XS has about 50 miles on it with the ACCT

To answer your question, no. A lose tensioner will only cause the chain to jump a tooth and possibly wreck the valves/head. Its possible your out of tune and out of sync and once it warmed up some it richened out enough for the lean condition to stop poping... As the others said though, toss that manual one and get the auto one. Then, 'set it and forget it'.

I installed the Raptor 660 CCT on both bikes. In both cases the housing alone contacts something in the motor and the last 2-3 mm has resistance. The body is about as long as the adjusted length of the old one coming out so I assume that is the body contacting the chain guide.

Started the XJ tonight first time since installing the Raptor CCT and it sounds fine. No mystery noises. I'll probably ride it to work tomorrow but if it were a problem it should have shown right at the start

Will any Raptor tensioner work or does it have to be model and year specific? I see them for 250, 350, 660, 700.

If you look at the last post on the bottom, it lists all the ATVs that have the same ACCT part number. There's a LOT listed, Rhinos, Grizzley, Raptors, etc. Most of them ar the larger 600-700 cc sizes though.
