Some type slower than others.. lol.

There's really not a lot goes wrong with these carbs that needs to be "Rebuilt". Just a cleaning, and occasionaly the float needles will start to leak, though the 80-82 bikes are better about this due to the viton tipped needles they use, as well as neoprene floats versus brass on the older bikes.

I had it at the shop since I'd been trying to get the bike ready to sell. I love the bike -- don't really want to sell it. But the suspension has always been the weak point for me since I have several back issues. Hitting a pot-hole unawares really takes its toll. I replaced the apparently non-functioning air shocks with Progressive shocks ... but still feel like I'm riding a naked bike with little to no suspension.

Had the bike on eBay last week and it only got to $1600. My reserve was $2549. I'm not giving the bike away after putting so much time and investing so much into it. Bought it for $2K five years ago and have added $2K in improvements.

The carb question here is for me, based on keeping the bike.

LOL.. You've gone the other way many do. Many try to get away from the progressive shocks and go to the XJ's air shocks. If you get a good functioning set of the XJ shocks, with little to no air pressure, they are springy and spongy and you won't feel the major bumps in the road so extremely, but you can pump up the air and get a pretty stiff ride for the twisties and handling. Same with the front.

Still have the air shocks I took off -- how can I know whether they're sound or not? If they are, will they provide a smoother ride than Progressives? I need smoothness -- I guess springiness. Not looking for tightness in twisties; looking for back-saving suspension.

Now don't get me wrong, you can wear the moving parts like the slide needles and main nozzle it slides down into, but that usually takes lots and lots of miles to do. Then you just throw in a Dynojet kit and replace that main nozzle, which usually enhances performance and gas mileage a bit anyway.. and go on. Or, you can go back to stock parts. Mikuni still has them.

When you had them on, did you try experimenting with different air pressures?
