  • Sudden loss of power

Hey guys, went to take a ride on my lunch break and run some errands.
3 or 4 miles down the road I noticed a severe lack of power, especially after shifting into 5th gear. Turned around and headed back to my shop. On the way back I was thinking about any changes since this morning's ride in when the bike ran great. I did hit one sharp bump on the way out at lunch time. Wondering if I should be checking my coils or anything? I did pull the plugs when I got back, number 1 was a bit black but still had a good spark when I checked it.
    Any ideas?

      Pickup coils

If its intermittent missing due to broken pickup coils it would have a dramatic loos of power and low top speed despite Wide Open Throttle. BTDT last year in Durango.

Without you doing anything to it? If so, then it's an intermittent fault that will come back when you least want it to. Have you looked at the pickup wires yet?

Look, as you know James is a bad term pertaining to pic-up coil wires. what James meant to say is take both hands and try to seperate every inch or so. If the insulation stretches like a rubber band.......ya gotta break in there.

Well, yeah... I didn't mean just look at them! If only we could fix faults by merely looking at them!

Some people can, James. My wife has been correcting my faults with just a look for 30 years.

                  Thanks again fellas!

The pick up coils that you are talking about, are they under the seat at the rear of the bike?
Never mind, I clicked on the link that was posted above and had a "duh" moment. You didn't say "Ignition Module".

                    Thanks so much guys!

I took the ignition cover off and did the inspection/repair as directed by this awesomely helpful thread: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543

And also, the advice on checking for more than one faulty wire was right on the money! I repaired 2 wires and then found no more.

Now I am wondering if this is why I got such a great deal on the bike. Maybe it cut out on the previous owner and scared him into selling it. I can't believe that he didn't surf the web and find this great forum!

                    Thanks again, 1000 times!
