  • What is that oil drain plug on the left side of the crank?!

I had a small leak of oil there so I went to tighten it and the head broke off spewing oil everywhere!

I've since ordered and installed a new plug, but I am still not sure what that plug is for... Is it the gear or engine oil?

I've read through forums on this site and checked the service manual and i believe it to be gear oil, but I am not 100% sure yet, so I am now resorting to this thread.

I am eager to ride! Please help!

That's not a drain plug... it's a oil galley seal. Not meant to be routinely removed.

With that, you seriously ought to consider getting a manual or downloading the one off this site before you have or create an issue that will keep you from riding that bike for a l-o-n-g time........just a word to the wise....

That (Engine) oil galley goes all the way through the motor. On the left side, there's that screw in plug. On the right side, there's simply a push-in plug with an O-ring and your alternator cover holds it in place. A few people have been dumb enough to fire up the bike with that alternator cover off for whatever reason. That oil galley is under 100% oil pressure, so it will shoot that plug out a great distance if you were to blip the throttle a little, along with a large amount of your oil all over your leg as you drink coffee one morning. You know... so I hear anyway.

              Hi Kyle and welcome,
great you found out what the plug was for and yeah, buy or download the book.
BTW, what sidecar do you have, could you post a photo (via photobucket)?

I thought I was about to replace the left side crank seal. Under close inspection, it doesn't appear to be leaking. It's more likely the screw in seal below the cover. Does anyone here have the dimensions of the o'ring seal? 93210-18319-00 is the part number.
