I would be cool with doing at your place! I know the bike needs to be cold and also newc4 is gone this weekend.

I think I may try to pop off the caps etc and see if I can get the current gaps to see if I even need shims. I had the valves adjusted about a year or two ago but I put a lot of miles on this thing. I am shocked to read these need to be checked every 4000 miles. Kickin myself I have put so many miles on it without checking..

I just recently measured my valve clearances and use the Motion Pro valve tool to take out the shims and record what I had in there. I advise you to take some time and search here about checking the clearance and doing the shim swaps. You should already have your mind made up if your going to attempt to use the motion pro tool or go full monte' and pull the came. If your using the motion pro tool then read on here and you will know ahead what problems you may run into using it... Above all, follow the manual though and use this site as a reference...you'll likely use them in parallel.

Not knocking our site or any of the tips we have here but I found this XJ site to be helpful on exactly how to turn the crank/cams back and forth to move the lobe for shim removal...

Just make sure your taking your clearances on a dead cold engine.
