They have been around a long time. I have used the frequently on the seal surfaces on spindles for the rear axles on heavy duty trucks. Notorious for grooving and refusing to seal. Speedi-Sleeve to the rescue.

          speedy sleeve

It's called a Speedy Sleeve and if I remember right you have to put it on backwards. It made the timiken seal fit tighter on the crank shaft and took up the slight gap that was between the shaft and the seal. It was in one of the posts on how to fix that left side leak and it had the part no. needed. I will try to find that post and give you the link to it.

                  speedi sleeve

National #99128 installs backward and after you remove installation lip you need to clean up burrs on edge. It can be installed with seal in place if you are careful. 1.257-1.263 shaft. Works great!

                    - what do you mean it installs backwards? are you talking about the speedi
                    sleeve?
                    - so does the part number 99128 relate to the 1.257-1.263 shaft? is that
                    measurement in inches?

                    Thanks

do they make something similar to a speedie sleeve but to seal the surface between the case and the seal? i think my case got scratched up removing the old seal. is is possible to have the oil leaking out from that gap opposed to the gap along the shaft? if its the outer gap thats leaking could be be sealed with RVT or is there too much pressure?

                      Thanks

Sorry. part number number 99128 under the brand name National which can be ordered through any auto parts store. 1.257-1.263 is the shaft size printed on the box. I used RTV around the area you say was scratched but just a fine coating. There is a lip (part of the sleeve) bent at 90* and die cut, think of how the opening of a soda or beer can is cut so you can pop it open, so you can push (tap lightly) it on then peel it off with a needle nose pliers. If I was to install it following Mfg. directions I would have had to split the engine case. So it is installed lip towards you and when you remove this installation lip I used a grinding stone bit in a Dremel tool to clean up the edge where the lip used to be so if or when the seal is replaced it will not catch the inner edge of the seal and rip it. I had the original seal leaking all over my left foot. I would put half , cut lengh wise, of a maxi pad (yes one of those thick female products) inside the cover stuffed in the bottom to absorb the oil that seeped out. Once I replaced the seal with new it was even worse and I heard about this speedy-sleeve on this site (THANKS XS1100) I have had no leaks for two seasons now and the only down side is that my left boot is no longer as water proof as it once was. Good wrenching and enjoy the wind.

                            P.s.

Part number for seal (also a National brand) is 223240. I bought these at a chain auto parts store, usually took two days to have it in hand. The seal cost was between 7 and 11 dollars but I can not remember the price of the sleeve but I know it was right in the same range.
