  • Where is the Frame ground?

This place is great. Somebody always knows things that I don't know.

Looking for frame ground....not the battery ground.....

Just want to know exactly where it is on a 1978 so I don't go hunting
all over the place for it.

I'm not sure what you mean by the frame ground. The negative side of the battery grounds to the frame just below the tool box and the frame grounds to the engine with a strap that runs from the frame just below the front of the battery to a mounting bolt for the middle drive.

You will also have several grounds from wire circuits to frame. The volt regulator mounting is a critical one because a ground wire was eliminated for in the wire clip. Everything is nicely painted from the factory but this can impede the grounding at the volt regulator mount. I had to improve the contact there for one of by xs's by scraping/grinding off the paint. This isn't specific to your question, but if you are chasing your tail with electrics, it can't hurt do to that.

That's right skids. I wasn't thinking of that.

There are 4 ground wires that come out of the harness and ground at the rear regulator mount bolt under the tank, or in that general vicinity.

          Thanks

Thanks guys I will check all of these connections, my apologies for not really knowing what I mean as well.

I'm trying to locate all the grounding connections and I'll check anything I can find
and I'll try to find that volt regulator ground and I think that is the one I'm looking for.

I have a Clymer manual that has colored witing diagrams in the back and there seems to be a long ground wire that runs between the Meter Assembly and the Flasher Cancelling unit. Between the Rectifier With Regulator ground wire and the Fuel Sending unit ground wire is something called the Frame Ground and I think this may be the one we are all talking about..

I'm not impressed with how Yamaha did the grounding on these bikes (retired electrician), I like to run a #12 wire between the battery cable attachment point on the frame to the grounds at the regulator. Copper is a better conductor than steel....
