  • Valve Shims

WOO-HOO my valve shims came today from cycle-re-cycle. Bet no one can guess what I'm doing tonight. (don't be tasteless now). Ordered them according to the charts in the tech tips. Hope I got it right. This is my first valve shim on this bike (the 81). So that means since it was new. Should have been done long ago. This week new valve shims, new SS brake lines, color tune and resynch the carbs, Oil change and plugs. May not be a new bike but it will feel that way to me.

          Shims

Yeah looks like BikerPhil got the info for ya right away. Those are what I bought and what I paid. Ordered em last thur. and got em today (7-8 days).
And to James, yeah I've had everything apart and it's all beautiful in there The bike was running fairly well when I checked the valves. Except for a minor mild pop on one of the cylinders when it comes back to idle after a rev up. To be honest this bike sat under a cover in a garage for too many years.
when I got it back out 5 yrs, ago I went through it from headlight to taillight had the calipers apart, carbs apart, and everything that would come off or open up. Things were grunged but really it was almost brand new. I didn't do anything to the motor other what you could do without cracking it open. I knew it was running very well when it got put away. So when I when I turned it over by hand (after letting some oil sit in the cylinders over night)and it went smooth and the compression was there I knew all would be well.

              shipping

Yeah, I bought 4 shims for a total of $23.80 plus $6.00 shipping. Total $29.80 at my mailbox. My local shop wanted $22.00 per shim and they were going to have to order them.

I did end up filling out the shipping/billing info for an order and saw the shipping was $6.00... Their price isnt too bad when you compare it to what your dealer wanted. I stoped at my local dealer and when they looked up their price it was about the same they told you ($25 ). I told them that was stupid crazy and asked what they would really sell them for and they said $5 each. I think Im going to take them up on it. You might want to add the link where you bought these to the product review so people and use them in the future. Thanks!

                  shims

Shims are in: all four intakes are right at .15mm , #1 exhaust is .21mm, 2 and 3 are .24mm and #4 is .21mm

I'll see about putting that in the product review area. Although I did get the name of cycle-re-cycle from a posting on here if it's repeat info then I hope TC or whomever just yanks it back out.

I will be waiting for your review following the valve adjustment... Im not too far behind you... I went back to the dealer and they decided they could not sell the shims at that low of a price so I decided to buy a lot of 10 off ebay which has all but one I need... Cant wait to see if it corrects my low end stumble/flatness.

My Yammie dealer sells shims for $7.95 each and will order what ever shims I want. He is not known for his good deals in this area, but $25 a shim is ridiculous.

That is kind of him really... my dealer said if they were to order a shim from mama'ha they have to buy a ream of 5 shims all the same size.

If any of you guys have THICK shims, (300 and thicker) that you don't want, I am looking for a lot of them, if they are cheap. Since odds are, that as time goes by, the takeout pool will have more and more thick ones in it, and the thick ones will become less usefull.
I need them for a research project.
                          Thanks, CZ

If your going to gring some to size I would encourage you take the hardness before you gring one and after you grind one. I would be guessing but think thes might be hardened all the way through or maybe ball peened...?
